Take Back America: Poverty and Politics

Hey look, I found the black people! The panelists are: Arlene Holt Baker – AFL-CIO, Rinku Sen – Applied Research Center and Color Lines magazine, Maude Hurd – ACORN, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Peter Edelman – Center for American progress and Georgetown Law School, and Vanessa Gueringer – ACORN.

My favorite quote of the whole conference so far is "No one will pay attention to you if you don't make noise." Damn skippy.

Even though the largest group of people in poverty in the U.S. are whites, everyone seems to agree that you have to discuss racism when talking about poverty. Edelman calls the intersection of race and poverty the most dangerous intersection. I’d add gender to that.

Apparently the name of the panel was changed from Race, Poverty and Politics to Poverty and Politics: Katrina’s Clarion Call. Rinku Sen is frustrated about having to use this code word. Most people in this room probably know what the code was for, so why use it? Does it help get butts in the seats? She also talks about the typical progressive response to issues of race, which is to generally not mention it. Or, to reassure non-whites that solutions will help everyone. You know, fall in line and you'll be fine. Hmm, perhaps a theme is emerging.

Thank you for keeping those of us who can't be there up to date on this! It is quite interesting.

This reminds me of a Wife Swap I saw in England...one of the wives was a "dutiful" wife, which sounds like about the same thing. She always wore garter-belt stockings and Japanese silk dresses cut to the thigh. One got the distinct impression she had gone on the show to show everyone how lovely a dutiful wife is. When her husband came home from work every day, they left their kid alone in the backyard to have "private time".
