Why does the headline at the link site not mention how racist this is in addition to being sexist? Man.
And don't read the comment thread. Once again a bunch of men saying how if it were men being ogled it would be okay and isn't that a tragedy? *eye roll*
Racism and sexism tossed into what has to be one of the worst tourism ads I've ever seen. Uugh.
And don't read the comment thread. Once again a bunch of men saying how if it were men being ogled it would be okay and isn't that a tragedy?
Let's not forget the ones about how humourless, hypersensitive, bra-burning feminazis are spoiling everyone's fun because they really need a good fuck.
I'm tempted to post a comment with a link to that Feminism 101 website, but I'm not optimistic enough to imagine any of those knuckledraggers would actually bother to read it. Sigh.
Good lord, was that comments section depressing. I was tempted to post but resisted the urge too, Vervain. What the hell is wrong with people?
I don't get the "there are sexist ads with men but no one complains then!!" argument.
If people think those ads are sexist (against men), why don't they say so, rather than complaining that no one's saying it? Or are they waiting for women to take responsibility for depictions of men as well as depictions of women? Because every time we try to be critical of mainstream depictions/defs of masculinity, we're called emasculating and bitchy. So I'm not sure what they're waiting for.
I would love nothing more than for men to start attacking traditional definitions of their gender the way women have been attacking theirs. That would actually help everybody.
Christ. Just what the hell were Iberia trying to promote besides horrible stereotypes of "island" women? What does a travelling baby have to do with travelling adults?
Iberia blows anyway. Anyone ever taken them? They're like Europe's answer to Northworst airlines. Ugh.
However the portrayal of the White Dude (tm) as a whiny baby is rather accurate. *ahem* And amazingly enough, not one white dude protested this that I saw.
Lessee: sexist, racist, plus not a little colonialism thrown in...oh yeah. What were they *thinking*?
it's a fucking baby in sunglasses. of course those girls are bottle feeding him, he's a baby. if you're looking for media to get offended by you'll find it just about anywhere. in say i don't know... an ad where a baby travels to an island to be bottle fed and massaged. that's the video! i was waiting for something really bad, one of the "island women" blowing the baby, that would have been wrong
Someone should support Mike Adam's theory about feminists and eat that baby.
Someone should support Mike Adam's theory about feminists and eat that baby. Mmm, babycakes
Dude I agree this ad is just wrong in almost every single way possible. The little baby is white and is already surveying some minority woman. I don't understand how this is possibly going to sell a tourism site.
I wrote an article about this over at Racialicious on May 29th. Feel free to take a looksie (great for those of who don't speak Spanish (I translate some of the lyrics) and/or who are not familiar with the issues re: Cuba and patronage of prostitution by European tourists). Enjoy: http://www.racialicious.com/2007/05/29/a-daycare-called-cuba-iberia-ad-more-than-sexist/
