Quick Hit: "'Democracy' in Hell"

Check out Katha Politt's latest, 'Democracy' Is Hell, that takes on the laughable idea that women are now "free" in Iraq.

God, Jessica, this makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. This is effing horrendous, and if I wasn't already cried out from the war, personal issues, dead police officers here, Virginia Tech, Fires across my country, Whales showing up in Sacramento, blah blah blah blah blah...I'd be crying right now. I can't believe how sick this war is making me. I can't believe how little people seem to care about issues like these.

America's "not in my back yard" mentality truly sucks. I wish I knew what I could do to help...but I'm powerless here to even stop an illegal land swap...much less to go to Iraq or Pakistan and protect these beautifully strong women.

Thanks for sharing this...now I'm super bummed.

:)

Tragic.

Read the column when my copy of The Nation came in the mail. I subscribed mostly because K.P. contributes so regularly.

MNH: One thing that's great about Katha's columns is that she often includes ways to take action. Check out her link to The Organization for Women's Freedom where you can support Iraqi women standing up for justice.

But yeah, it's still hard not to feel creeping despair at the possibility stopping the war train, or of effecting deep cultural change.

According to the Feminist Majority Foundation, over 1,000 men participated in her murder. It is so very sad.

Thanks Anna...it just keeps making me sadder and sadder. Thanks for the information. I'll check out an issue of "The Nation" today, thanks for the heads up.

I hope I don't rage out today like I did last night in a drunken stupor when I went on the loudest, most idiotic rant of all times and then everyone left the bar....

Thanks again.

I watched the video on CNN. I do NOT recommend watching it, but mention it only because it looks like a lynch mob of maybe up to 20 men.

Naturegirl is correct, the link she posted does say 1,000 men, but the video seems to show far fewer. This of course doesn't make it any less horrible, I just think that if facts are unclear it can confuse any issue.
