Are you a feminist?

Fetch me my axe has a great roundup of feminism on YouTube, including this clip from the film I Was A Teenage Feminist.

Yes I am, and the looks I get in my classes(undergrad) when I say that, in communications we discussed the difference between gender and sex and some guy came up to me after class and tell me "you seem like a nice girl but you should cut it out with all that feminist bullshit" the joys of combatting misinformation

Mirroring your book!! I love that the presentation of definitions allows for recognition and understanding of the facets of feminism -- it is different for every person, and THAT IS OK. ;)

There was a fantastic blog about this in 2003 that is just as pertinent now:

"If you believe in, support, look fondly on, hope for, and/or work towards equality of the sexes, you are a feminist.

Yes, you are."

Best quote ever:
"If you're breathing, why aren't you a feminist?"

And people who don't consider themselves feminists get outraged when I call them sexist.

Damn, kgsavoie, beat me to it! That woman made my day.

But this one came a close second:

"Saying I'm a feminist almost seems the same question as asking me if I'm black. I don't really understand why I wouldn't be."

Loved it. Loved the whole video.

Also, go to the "Fetch me my axe" website and scroll down to Molly Ivins (R.I.P.) on "Dildo Diaries" (10th one down). Hil-ar-i-ous

Is there an equivalent to "feminist" for race or sexuality? It strikes me that we have a word for those who support equal rights for women, but we only have words for those who oppose equal rights for non-white and gay people. I'm not sure that means anything, but I find it a bit irritating for some reason.

Aw, that made me really happy.

You're right, antiope, that IS irritating, and I'd never really thought about it before. "Feminist" is sort of a name for a political movement, so the sort-of equivalent in that sense would be phrases like "civil rights movement," "black power," or "gay pride." But those are so much more historically situated than "feminist" and "feminism" (I speak as a white, straight feminist, so someone correct me if I'm wrong!) . . . we don't have, like, a word for the general political-cultural stance opposite of "homophobic," or "racist."

Cultural trend-setters and linguists, get to work!

This film looks so amazing that I requested that my school library purchase it and they did (even though a DVD with an educational liscence costs upwards of $300)! Other students (and frequenters of public libraries) should demand films like this one and others from Women Make Movies become part of collections everywhere: the more copies in libraries, the more access to the whole movie, and the more people realizing that "if you're breathing, why aren't you a feminist?"

How about anti-racist? Look it up on Wikipedia, moderation keeps eating my links. The anti-racist training company New Demographic actually has an anti-racist parenting blog in addition to Racialicious, a pop culture and race blog.
On another note, what about queer rights advocates?
I'm not sure that name has caught on. Could allies encompass those who are not heterosexual and/or gender identified by sex?
