I love me a good tshirt, and our gal Jaclyn Freidman has made several. After publishing an article on drinking and rape, Jaclyn received some less-than-polite comments. Including a couple that called her a "lying, man-hating whore." (Because she decided to write about being sexually assaulted in college--the nerve!)
Here's Jaclyn's response: "Well, I gotta say, that hurt. A lot. Until I realized it only had power because I let it. And what takes the piss out of a phrase faster than putting it on a cute tshirt?"
Indeed. So now you can buy shirts that say: lying man-hating whore; working hard to undermine your marriage; I hate your freedom; and hairy-legged lesbian. Fun.

I recently wrote and performed a poem which dealt with the aftermath of my sexual assault. I got similar reaction - comments like "go grrrrl power" and even was asked if I was going to "switch teams" and I just don't get why it is implied that I hate men because I express a little difficulty dealing with my sexuality after being beaten up and raped.
To the contrary, Marnanel, I really hope blokes will wear them too!

My dad will really love the hairy legged lesbian one. aeons ago at a rally against operation rescue in new orleans he was called a goat, a fornicator and a lesbian. he told me he was pleased by that because he's always liked women. when my sister came 'out' i told him that now he and my sister could be lesbians together. he was born in 1923; he joined NOW in the late 60s because he wanted his daughters to have the same opportunities that he had. He and my mom produced two daughters - a construction manager and an architect who don't take crap from anybody.

Brig, I'm sorry that happened to you. I think the commenters suggested I hate men b/c they imagined (since I couldn't possibly have actually been raped) I was inventing the rape charges just to punish men for consensual sex I later regretted. Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth.
Brig, men who react angrily to women talking about their experiences with sexual assault, it seems to me, are reacting out of fear. Either they know that their own conduct is implicated, or fear that it is; or they think their friends' conduct is implicated; or they just don't want to have to face up to the fact that men rape women and it is reasonable for women to be angry and distrustful in response. (In fact, it seems to me that a good portion of the rape apologist trolls really just want a gold star and a declaration that "we don't mean you, dear.")
Hell with them. I'm sorry you were raped and beaten. What happened to you was wrong and it was not the product of anything you did. Process however works for you. Ignore jerks that say otherwise: they have unresolved issues.
Awesome, I usually hate "clever saying" t-shirts but this one is very necessary!
I hate her for stealing my shirt idea. I made a shirt in early 2002 which reads "I hate freedom". And let me tell you, I was no one's favorite person when I wore it, but it amused me so much. I think I still have it somewhere. I should start wearing it again.
In college a bunch of us made shirts saying "Freak of Nature" after being called such in an editorial in the school rag because of our leftist politics (not so popular in rural Nebraska, it turns out...) and we wore them with pride!
I love these shirts.
However, I'm a tiny bit unhappy about the "clueless sorority girls" comment on the side. While I get that there are lots and lots of women who are members of sororities who are totally clueless, not all of us are. I suppose my sorority, or sororities on my campus in general are the exception rather than the rule, but generalizations like that still upset me.
All the same, as soon as I get my next paycheck I'm buying one.
KC, that's exactly what I didn't mean to say. I specifically said "clueless sorority girls" instead of just "sorority girls" b/c I didn't want to suggest anything about all sorority girls. Instead, I specified it was the clueless ones I was concerned about. Sorry to offend -- I really tried to do the opposite.
It makes my heart happy to know that some kick-ass, clued-in sorority girls will be wearing my shirts!
