Quick Hit: Irish teen will travel to England for abortion

Finally some good news on this case. The teen girl in Ireland whose fetus is terminally ill has (finally) been granted permission to go to England to get an abortion. But not, of course, without going through hell first.

Oh thank god. This whole situation was disgusting, I'm so glad that it has finally come to a positive resolution (at least a positive as is possible in this case).

She's a hero!

I'm sorry she suffered--I'd prefer people get a good live over the opportunity to become a hero--but she is definitely a hero now.

About time!

Wonderful!

Hurrah for Miss D. I really hope she can gain whatever autonomy she had back and can go about her business in private.

So this is definitely the final final decision? We're not going to see anyone else dragging the poor girl back in court?

Damn, if I were her, I'd be hopping on that boat to the UK this afternoon.

Best wishes to her. x

Well, I'm glad that she can do this. And Jen, if I were her, I'd not only get on that boat this afternoon, but I wouldn't come back, either.

I hope when all of this is said and done that she has some time to just relax. I can only imagine how draining this whole situation has been. She's 17 and pregnant. Stressful. She finds out she is not going to have a healthy baby. Heartbreaking. Rather than suffering through 5 months of carrying and bonding with a baby that will not survive for more than a few hours, she decided to have an abortion. Given most of what I read indicates that she would not have wanted an abortion otherwise, that probably wasn't an easy or painless decision. Then she gets dragged through the courts, detained like a prisoner, and has to listen to strangers comment on her personal tragedy. Who knows what kind of physical and emotional strain this poor young woman has been through. Hopefully she will be able to move beyond this.

The anti-abortion group Pro-Life Campaign said that the case highlighted the need to put in place support "so that no woman feels abortion is the only option open to her".

Oh My God... are they SERIOUSLY that retarded? The baby wouldn't live more than three days after birth, and they think she should still go ahead and have it?

This is the ridiculousness of the "it's natural" position... if we went all natural, we would only be able to support maybe a million humans, and their life span would be in the 20's or 30's...

These people take their beliefs and force them like a square peg into every round hole they see... I swear...

I understand that individuals may have strong feelings about carrying their "angel babies" to term, but I find it incredibly insensitive and distasteful that there is even a conversation about banning or preventing these procedures when a fetus will not survive as a baby. I could never, ever carry a fetus like that to term, and I have two children. I could not walk around, visibly pregnant to friends, family and strangers alike for months and know there was going to be no baby for me to love. I could not form that bond and feel the baby kicking and have to answer stupid ignorant questions that are hard enough when you are happy about being pregnant. I could not suffer sciatica, swelling, heartburn, labor and birth so I could watch my baby die just like I knew it would.

And, as a future medical practitioner, I think full term pregnancy and birth have associated health threats and discomforts that, in most cases, outweigh the risks of a medical abortion in these cases.
