In response to the terrifying Supreme Court decision last week, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) are promoting the The Freedom of Choice Act, which was introduced in the House and Senate on Thursday.
The legislation would codify the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and bar states from limiting abortion rights. It was introduced in 2006 and 2004 but never made it out of either the Senate or House judiciary committees.That could change in the House this time with a clear Democratic majority, but it's uncertain if there are enough votes on the Senate side.

Thanks for posting the NARAL link. I emailed my representatives. Even if it doesn't pass, make each rep vote on it. The majority of the country is pro-choice. Let those who defy their constituents pay the price.

I think it is definitely worth making an effort to try, bad climate or not.
I argued in my blog a couple of days ago that it's worth the effort just to see where our representatives really stand. Like Jane said, at least make the bastards vote on it.

I wish that the language of choice was removed from the abortion movement altogether. It's a matter of reproductive RIGHTS. Not merely a choice. Regardless of who decides to make use of that right, nonetheless all women should have it.
Choice leaves the whole issue open to trivialization -- unfair but still.
The Dems need to do way more. In 86% of US counties, there is no abortion provider. That stat should be everywhere. The abortion right does not really even exist in reality for most women.

The bill is a nice idea, but will have little effect as long as the Supreme Ct upholds laws that limit access to abortions like in Gonzales v. Carhart.
