The Center For Reproductive Rights, Ipas and NARAL Pro-Choice New York organized a talk on Thursday with Mónica Roa, an international champion for women's reproductive rights and the lawyer who challenged the lawsuit against Colombia's restrictive abortion law. (And ultimately helped change it.)
Challenging Abortion Law in Colombia with Mónica Roa, Director of Gender Justice Programme at Women's Link Worldwide
Thursday April 5th, 7:00 PM @ The Center For Reproductive Rights, 120 Wall Street New York, NY
RSVP Required for Admission Please RSVP by April 3rd to RSVP@reprorights.org IDs Required to Enter the Building
This is nearly a year after Colombia voted to legalize abortion in the case of rape, incest or if the woman's life is in danger. Roa originally filed the lawsuit to legalize abortion if the woman's life was at risk. Colombia's highest court decided not to rule on the case, so they went all the way and filed another suit requesting the legalization of abortion in general. Shortly thereafter, the law was changed.
Dopeness. Tomorrow is the deadline, so make sure to RSVP if you'd like to attend.

Not a big deal, but the district in the US is spelled "Columbia". The country in South America is spelled, "Colombia".
I saw her speak briefly this weekend at the annual "From Abortion Rights to Social Justice" conference at Hampshire College. She said how she's actually seen her name in crossword puzzles, under "woman who changed the abortion law in Colombia." Awesome.
Thanks for fixing that. Feel free to delete this comment and the first one as neither makes sense anymore.
I wish I was going to be in NYC for this awesome event...

Also, another Bushee resigned today!

I enjoyed talking with her at the Hampshire College conference this weekend, too. I found her very down-to-earth and inspiring; she is calm and collected and very intelligent. The presentations I saw (one long-ish, one very short, which may be the one that cupcakesofdeath saw) were both very positive but at the same time recognized that the way that the constitutions work in other Latin American countries are similar but frequently present more difficulty than the consitutional courts in Colombia, where Roa was able to present her request as a Colombian citizen, without needing a political or judicial office.
it said 'error' - sorry for the multiple postings!!!
Like a few other people, I saw her at the Repro Justice conference this past weekend as well. (Which, btw, had the largest turnout yet! Over 1,000 people!) And, like the other conference-goers, I urge anyone who can go to her talk to definitely go. She's incredible. (And if you can't, def check out the video blog above...especially around the 3-minute mark, which is a point she reiterated in the closing plenary that I really really loved.)
If you can't get to NYC on Thursday, Monica is also speaking at UNC Law School, Rm 5042, TODAY at noon (for those of you here in the Triangle). She is speaking TOMORROW, Wednesday, at Harvard Law (Cambridge MA), at 4:45 p.m. in Hark South. She's an incredible woman, and these are great chances to listen to a different perspective on human rights and abortion and to actually pick her brain while you're at it!
