Unexpected Feminist Movie of the Week.

shes_the_man.jpg

I know, I know, it's Shakespeare turns teen movie, but I caught it while on my much-needed Beer and Couch Day (self-explanatory) and fell in love. The film, a spin-off of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, addresses a number of feminist issues, from Title IX to gender stereotyping. Oh how I love thee feminist teen movie, let me count the ways...

Anyone seen it?

Nope. For the 80s nostalgists, there's the rough equivalent, Just One of the Guys. It's nothing special, but it's got perennial 80s bully William Zabka!

BTW, wasn't 10 Things I Hate About You a modern version of The Taming of the Shrew?

Not to be an absolute ass, but that's Elizabeth Browning, not Shakespeare. :)

I do like Twelfth Night, though (along with Midsummer Night's Dream, a drug trip if I ever read one), so I may have to watch this. Thanks!

I have watched this movie at least half a dozen times, my daughter loves it. I always get choked up at the end when she still gets to play soccer. *tear.

I thought the movie was moderately terrible, but its heart was definitely in the right place.

I thought this movie was adorable but horrible. It definitely had a good message though.

I am a sucker for this movie. My teenage sister has it, and I bug her all the time to watch. It is another of those corny teen movies but it does have the great feminist message.

I must admit I am guilty of watching this movie to see Channing Tatum.

I haven't seen it but I definitely look for it when it comes to basic cable in a couple years

Billie. What an ending!

Saw it, loved it. Amanda Bynes is hysterical. This movie was a definite "secret" guilty pleasure.

Yeah, this movie is awesome. I hope as she gets older Bynes finds a place in the movies. It's rough in Hollywood for funny women; you either have to be a fratgirl a la Cameron Diaz, or else a prescribed "quirky" girl aping Annie Hall for the bazillionth time.

I actually just saw this for the first time last week and I really enjoyed it. I have a weakness for fluffy teen films anyway, but it exceeded my expectations. I loved that Viola was independent enough to dump her douchebag boyfriend after he dissed her in front of the boys' soccer team and go do her own thing, as complicated as it turned out to be. I also think Amanda Bynes is hilarious - I can't wait to see what else she does.

Random fact: the screenwriters who wrote "She's The Man" also wrote "10 Things I Hate About You", which I also love - Kat Stratford is one of my favourite characters. Smart, snarky, kind of flawed - I want to be her when I grow up.

*snaps* hated it

Yes, this movie wasn't oscar worthy, but it was very watchable. Amanda Bynes was so funny!

I have a special place in my heart for movies like "She's the Man". In my DVD collection I'll put it between "Red Dawn" and "Troop Beverly Hills".

Not to put myself out there too much but I got to intern for the company that made the film and I got the read the script before it was ever cast. It was a great script, really really funny. I went to see it in theaters if only to support my former bosses and I didn't find it as entertaining as when I'd read it but it was still lots of fun, though Amanda Bynes looks NOTHING like a boy;)

And Channing Tatum is hot. His little happy dance in the gym when the other girl asks him out is priceless.

Yeah, I went there. :)

As a femme dyke who swoons over boyish girls and women in drag/female cross-dressers, I did enjoy both "She's the Man" and "Just One of the Guys."

But I also have to say that I wish both films fulfilled their queer potential...in each story, a girl has a crush on the boy version of the protagonist, and comes on to her, but she resists because, really, she just wants the hot guy.

Of course a mainstream movie for teens wouldn't ever be daring enough to have to two girls get together, but it is just a wish : )

About a week or two ago, I remember hearing a female classmate I admire a lot talk about how she was in the mood to watch the movie that day.
I haven't seen it, though.

Beer? I was told it was mint milk shakes.

Learn something every day
['cause I forget something every night]

ok, serious now.
How do you get beyond the dust jacket? I'd never have looked twice let alone checke it out. Is marketing actually backfiring in this case?

I do have to agree with alicepaul on this one... I had a guilty pleasure of seeing Amanda Bynes in drag. Kinda hot...

but anyway, I thought the movie had really hilarious moments and the message was positive.
