Think Progress reported late yesterday that the Justice Department replaced one of the fired U.S. attorneys, Bud Cummins of Arkansas, with former Karl Rove aide Tim Griffin -- passing over Cummins's deputy, Jane Duke, because Duke was on maternity leave at the time.
A typical tale of a qualified woman being passed over for a job so it could be awarded to a member of the boys' club. Add pregnancy discrimination to the list of Bush administration transgressions in Purgegate.
As the commenters pointed out over at TAPPED, they would have found a reason to pass over Cummins' deputy whether that position was held by a man or a woman. But the fact that Duke's recent pregnancy was cited as the reason she was skipped over -- not her job performance or anything like that -- is telling.
ALSO the National Partnership for Women and Families is calling on the Justice Department to review its policies and practices to ensure it's not penalizing employees for being pregnant or taking parental leave.

Uhmmm...
I guess this confirms it: the Bushies are either blindingly stupid or blindingly arrogant, or both. To come out and ADMIT you did something illegal, as though smugly sitting there and laughing "go ahead and sue me. I DOUBLE DOG DARE you." Man.
I literally feel sick to my stomach.
Let's be fair, enforcement at the Civil Rights Division under the stalwart leadership of John "Cover Up That Statue-Titty" Ashcroft and Alberto "Joel Cairo" Gonzales had atrophied to the point where people were unsure whether pregnancy discrimination was even a known concept, let alone against the law.
I honestly don't think it's stupidity. After 6+ years, the elimination of habeus corpus, the stuff were seeing in DOJ ONLY now coming to light, military tribunals, blatantly putting anti-abortion activists in positions related to reproductive rights, lack of voter discrimination suits, lack of civil rights law suits being pursued and the apparent belief of those in charge that the President is the Extreme Emperor of the Universe, I believe it's pure arrogance.
Every time I watch Tony Snow work his verbal gymnastics, I want to go take a shower.
This makes me sick to my stomach too. Still there are people out there that praise this man and his Administration even when they do illegal acts. However I am not surprised by this. This Administration believes it can do whatever it wants and claim that measures or acts as national security. But there is another social problem lying under here, that women are still being torn between motherhood and having a career.
This is just another example how women are pushed out of some professions. Gosh, forbid if a woman decides to carry on the human race, while keeping her profession, and then made to feel guilty in society for working or not working. If we want any change in this matter, we need to hold men to the same exceptions we hold to women to be mothers. We don’t blame the fathers enough for not being home, we don’t blame the father for not choosing to stay home with the children. Instead we make fun of him if he does. Let’s face it, the Bush Administration is not the only place where this occurs, if we want a change, then we need a change in our society’s attitude.
