Perhaps because cigarettes are 8 dollars a pack and you can't smoke inside and it is COLD outside (from what I hear) the percentage of female smokers has made a sharp decrease in NY.
The data, which is a random telephone survey of 10,000 residents, shows more women are becoming health conscious now. Calling it "bad news" for tobacco companies, city health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said that many companies are also using various marketing gimmicks to attract women smokers.According to AP reports, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. is using pink packaging and fashion magazine ads to market a new cigarette brand aimed at women called Camel No. 9. However, the vice president for marketing of the Camel brand sees their move as giving women smokers "a choice with products we believe are more appealing than existing products."
The latest figures from the health department find that the number of women smokers fell from 20 percent in 2002 to 16 percent in 2005 - a period when only one new smoker in four was a woman.

Pink packaging?!?! Are marketing people really that stupid? Do they honestly believe that the key to selling anything and everything to women is to make it pink? Jeebus h christ on a trailer hitch.
Heh. Does anybody else remember Nicole Hollander's Sylvia cartoon about Supercop, a female superhero who would run around harrassing women about taking care of themselves. In one cartoon, she accosts a woman smoking a cigarette saying something like "Do you know that four times as many men gave up smoking as did women last year? Are you dumber than a man? Do you want to die?" while the poor beleaguered woman puts out her cigarette and says "OK, OK, I'm putting it out, see?"
The caption was something like "The World's Most Annoying Superheroes."
I quit for the winter too, since my workplace instituted a "smoke free" policy that requires me to hike out to the border of the property before lighting up....*grumble*
The "marketing cigarettes to women" thing reminds me of a bit by a comedian (wish I could remember who--Dennis Leary maybe?):
"Want to get people to quit smoking? Just make the cigarettes pink. Most men will quit immediately, and most women won't inhale."
Guess we'll soon find out if he was right.
Of course, it's also stupid. I've yet to meet anyone, male or female, who didn't find Virginia Slims laughable, and to my knowledge women don't have some kind of intense biological need to surround themselves with the color pink.

Well hell, I've got asthma, but I MUST HAVE THOSE CIGARETTES! Health be dammned, my womanly need to be surrounded by all things pink makes it impossible for me to do anything but start puffing away.
