CO abortion ban fails in Senate

Woo hoo!

A Senate committee split along party lines to kill a proposal Monday that would have banned most abortions in Colorado.

…The proposal (Senate Bill 143), modeled after one passed in South Dakota last year but later rejected by voters, would have banned abortions except to save the life of the mother and in cases of incest, rape and a medical emergency.

It’s so nice when we actually get good news about repro rights.

From the article:

“Abortion has opened up a culture of death, Rohrbough said, after recounting how students ran past his son as he lay on the sidewalk outside Columbine in 1999.

Can someone please explain to me the connection between abortion and the Columbine shootings? Because I sure don't see one.

Also, I hate it when these people try to compare abortion to slavery. They really do care more about the fetus than the woman. Forcing a woman to go through with an unwanted pregnancy is what is similar to slavery. Not allowing the woman to be a full human being able to make choices about her own body. Renfroe's statement about "hiding behind the word ‘choice’?" makes me feel sick.

Anyway, thank goodness the proposal got killed!

Also nice to see good liberal news coming out of Colorado.

sbsanon-
I don't agree with Rohrbough that we have a "culture of death" or that allowing women to make autonomous decisions about their bodies is "murder" (as many pro-lifers believe), but the argument is basically that if our society allows abortion, then it is failing to protect life and hence, creating a culture of death. And, it is in the context of a culture of death that the Columbine shootings occurred.

Good to see that a bill *even with* exceptions got slammed. Also note in the same article that a different House committee approved a measure requiring hospitals to tell rape victims about availability of EC. I hope the other 49 are paying attention.

Is it odd to anyone else but me that it almost always seems to be a white guy (often wealthy) who compares the aborted fetus to the black slaves of America's past? I'm not black nor did any of my family members own slaves from what I know, but if I had a personal history that involved slavery in any way, shape, or form I'd sure as hell be offended by the comparison. Slaves were physically abused, raped, tortured, etc. for many years of their lives. I do not believe I've ever heard of anyone denying a fetus (which I do not believe is an actual human until it can live outside its mother's womb) to the right to persue life, liberty, and happiness followed by rape and a beating.

And to think my fiance wants to move to CO when he finishes school... *Shudder* I won't live there willingly. He'll have to drag my ass there. It's Oregon or bust.

as a colorado resident, i read the bill when it was first proposed and i don't remember there being exceptions for rape or incest. the only exception was for the health of the mother.

RedDragoness--
Don't be afraid to come to Colorado! It's really a great place, and the activist community here is pretty big. I know there seem to be a lot of ass-hats in Colorado as of late, but Denver is a great city and the progressives here are working really hard to make some changes.

So really. Give it a shot.

RedDragoness, I'm with Colleen and her Chamber of Commerce! A lot of ugly stuff comes out of Colorado Springs, but there are strong progressive communities in Colorado, e.g., the People's Republic of Boulder! And we did recently elect a Democratic governor, by a wide margin.

The interesting thing about Colorado is that its libertarian streak can cut both ways. Sometimes it looks right-ish, as in vociferous opposition to taxation, and sometimes it looks left-ish, as in the virtual decriminalization of marijuana.

Anyway, hurrah for this development!

“Today’s aborted baby is the black slave of our history. When will we stop turning our heads and hiding behind the word ‘choice’? he said.

Um, is it just me, or were the slaves of the slavery era people. And when, exactly, were white peoples rights being abused because they couldn't own slaves? Last time I checked, a slave wasn't part of the Master's body.

And you know... they were ALIVE.

You brought up SD. I hate to be a bearer of bad news, nut the conservatives are pushing a NEW bill through the legislature as I write this. They have added, life of mother clause, and. I think, rape/incest ones.

From what polling I have seen, and I don't remember how old they were, this version, if passed in the legislature, will have a fair chance to get public support at the polls.

Sorry to bring bad news.

Colleen:

You're right - the only exception in the original bill was for preserving the mother's life, not for rape or incest.

And RedDragoness, what Colleen and Kattyben said: Denver and Boulder are great places to visit. There's always been a big progressive community in Boulder, and the progressives here in Denver are getting louder. Which is always good.
