Urgh!!!
Everything she's saying is true, especially regarding women in positions of power.
Here in NZ, where we're on to our second woman Prime Minister, you'd think maybe the media would be more progressive.
But oh no, media reports, and her fellow politicians, play inordinant attention to the Prime Minister's appearance, especially around election time.
It's just so blatantly "Double Standards 101".
Journalism is dead. Pure and simple.
There is no objectivity. There is no real respect for the news. It is all about sensationalism. Last night, I was watching my local news, and they kept discussing the speech last night. However, every time they mentioned the speech, they kept plugging a later, additional news program: "Stay tuned to hear a local military family's thoughts to the news."
Ok, I get that it technically is news, but what I disagree with is this constant plugging for additional programming. Each news station has multiple tangential stations that have their own stations. It's insane. The only way to continue to support each of these conglomerates is to make every "news" story into something more reminiscent of Star and Enquirer stories.
My long-winded point here is that as long as we tie our news and journalism to pop culture and sensationalism, the less newsworthy it will be. In this era of celebrity craze where females (and arguably everyone) are dominated by appearance, the news equals appearance.
YES. see the conversation we are having in the india post about this. i think its absolutely a responsibility of feminists. the media bias towards many things has a HUGE effect on public and global consciousness.
