Fox commentator: Girls have cooties

Oh dear lord. Fox25 News out of Boston had this gem of a segment called "Letting it Rip" about Harvard possibly featuring gender-neutral housing.

The featured commentator is Doug V.B. Goudie--who I was unsurprised to see is known as Doug "Virgin Boy" Goudie. (Not that there's anything wrong with being a virgin, but it seems to me that the virgin thing in this case may be more about finding women gross and untouchable than anything else--and therefore relevant.)

Shorter Goudie? Girls are The Nasty! Who would want to be in the same room as them?!

What he actually said?

"Are they going to have that time of the month together too, because what guy would sign up for this other than one that has that issue?"

Only a guy with like...a VAGINA would want to be near girls. Ew.

Goudie: ...I went to Hamilton where we had coed bathrooms which by the way weren’t so groovy either for the ladies. Why not up the ante? Oh hey Gene, I’m Stacey, I’ll be your roommate, I’ll put up some lilac curtains and I have some potpourri over here...are you kidding me? Life’s tough enough once you get into the real world.

Anchor: What does she (Stacey) look like?

Goudie: Harvard... she’s smart...so how good can she look?

Classy, classy guy.

Thanks so much to the folks at The National Student Genderblind Campaign for letting me know about this.

Just a question - If anyone has an answer, just email me or post. I'm at work and cannot, therefore, check out the videos and stuff that you guys sometimes post.

Is there a way to read a transcript or anything? I've looked on some of the websites. Maybe I'm just an idiot...

I didn't see anywhere visible where you could get the transcript or anything. But you know, in college, there are a couple of guys that are friends that I would have lived with in lieu of my stuck up roommate. Hey, I fart, I belch, I can drink beer with the rest of 'em. I'm no fancy pants chick. And, having spent days on end at my then boyfriend's house with 4 other guys, it really isn't a big deal. And he's right, how could an intelligent woman possible be attractive? I mean good Lord. In general I hate Fox News.

What about TLF? She's smart and goodlooking. So I guess his theory doesn't work cause I went to community college and I look like Jerri Blank, but I guess people like this dude and cHutchins would say that I have no reason to live unless I am funny, and I mean the haha kind.

Ugh. Too many times this week... *sigh*

Just yesterday(? the day before?) I was reading how it's freaky for attractive women to enjoy sci-fi.

I don't get it. Look, I'm a guy. I love to cook. I have flowers and plants that I keep alive in my apartment without the help of anyone with a vagina. I expect that there are plenty of women who can lift more weight, know a lot more about cars, and enjoy watching football (which I can't stand). The fact that I happen to have a penis, and someone else has a vagina doesn't really tell you a damn thing about that person's personal tastes. How hard is that to get?

Holy F*! I definitely pick and choose what I watch and Fox does NOT make the list, but I have to say I was completely shocked by this whole bit.
The blatant, unchallenged misogyny in every word out of that guys mouth is unbelievable!

The gist of the video is this:

Women are crazy to live with, because they're concerned with decorating and other "girly" things; therefore, the only guys who would want to live with them would also be either "girly" or annoyed all the time. Plus, guys won't be able to fart or burp as much.

Oh yeah also, they'll probably be having sex all the time.

(I'm surprised the commentator didn't make the joke about not trusting anything that bleeds for seven days and doesn't die. To call him juvenile would be disrespectful to children.)

I hate how sexism and gender stereotypes are so accepted in our society. If you replaced every female gender reference with a reference to an ethnic group, people would be outraged at the racism. It also really bugs me that so many people assume that two people can't live together without having sex. If anything, living with someone makes them way less appealing as a partner, because you get to see their true side.

In my own experience, I wouldn't mind having a male roommate if it was someone I was compatible with (same with female roomies). I hated dorm life, and looking for roommates was a challenge since my school is 80% male. I would've liked some more choices.

I love the anchor who's introducing the segment and offers up the best Freudian slip ever: "Students say they're just looking for someone to be combatible--er, compatible with."

LOL. Nice one, buddy.

By this guy's logic, anyone who has ever lived with a woman is, in fact, a woman.

I will be letting my brothers and father know this as soon as I see them. They have, after all, lived with both me and my mother. My brother even lived with our aunt for a while... THE HORROR.

prairie, and I bet their cycles matched up and everything!

Haha, TLF. I'll ask. ;)

I thought of another problem with this... One of the arguments I've heard for gender-neutral housing is that homosexual students would be able to live with someone of the opposite sex, and thus more comfortable. But I guess Teh Gays don't exist to these idiots.

My boyfriend's comment: "What the hell? I thought the woman would at least call them on it, but then she joined in the fray! Why are they all so stupid?!"

I don't think it even comes down to, heck, some girls belch and fart and watch football! Compatible! In the coed suite where I lived my senior year, the one who was the most uptight about cleaning, doing the dishes, and getting the place vaccuumed weekly was one of the guys. He was also the only one who cooked regularly. Oh, and by the way, as messy and female as I am, he and I got along fine as housemates. You sit down and talk and work out compromises. My god, it's like we were in college...and exected to learn how to behave like adults or something. Craziness, I tell you.

Feh, my college has nothing *but* coed housing (except for one all-women floor one can live on by choice, but that works out because, like many liberal arts schools, we have a small percentage more women than men). So did at least one of the small handful of other schools I applied to. I lived on a mixed-sex floor for two years, and I can assure you nobody sprouted anomalous genitals or anything. We even had a shared bathroom, which was totally civilized--what do you know, it turns out not all men live in pigsties and not all women spend their lives in the shower/in front of the mirror! How shocking!

Yawn.

Larry Summers notwithstanding, I'm actually really surprised Harvard doesn't have (at least some) gender-neutral housing already; I hadn't realized my school was all that far ahead of the curve. Maybe big institutions move more slowly on stuff like this.

Wait, he went to HAMILTON?!?!
Oh goddammit, I hate when assholes went to my college and give us a bad name. HAMMIES ARE NOT ALL LIKE THAT, I SWEAR!

We do have co-ed bathrooms, as well as co-ed suites and apartments, and as a lady, I personally think they're pretty awesome.

I lived on a mixed-sex floor for two years, and I can assure you nobody sprouted anomalous genitals or anything.

What a letdown.

My college was almost entirely co-ed housing as well, unless you counted the Greek houses and the Women's Resource Center. One room would have male residents, the next female. Nobody thought anything of it - I *certainly* didn't know it was unusual in any way.

Nobody seemed uncomfortable. Men didn't start to menstruate. *Nobody* was particularly good at housekeeping. To tell the truth, we had more trouble with *racial* tension, but that's another story.

True, there was a fair amount of sex going on, but...y'know...college. I have no idea if it was an *unusual* amount of sex or not.

Wow. Were they drunk? I think I'd like to thank these people. They made sexism look more foolish than my best arguments ever could.

Utsusemi, Harvard does already have coed floors (and possibly bathrooms, I don't know). This segment is about having coed ROOMS. So a guy and a girl could share a bedroom.
Anyway, I just sent off an enraged email to them. Since I'm in their market share (I live near boston) maybe they'll pay more attention. Not that I ever watched fox news in the first place, but still.

This will be a very interesting experiment to demystify of women. Women = trouble and orgies is so stereotypical. It would freak me about a little bit to room with a male stranger.

Sorry for the strange typos.

My boyfriend and I can't stand that guy. Before we moved out of the state I was very tempted to stop by the studio and throw a pie at him

Thanks for blogging about this. I called the Fox 25 station and left a message.

[0+] Author Profile Page utsusemi said:

Betsy, that makes a lot more sense (i.e., it's not as drastic as I'd initiallly thought). My computer's not well lately, so I was kind of afraid to try playing the video.

Though my point still stands, since male and female students also can and often do get campus apartments together here. And share off-campus houses, which no college can stop its students from doing anyway. No ill effects so far, obviously.

So that guy's still a toad.

[0+] Author Profile Page Bolo33 said:

I clicked the feedback link at the bottom of their video page and sent them a politely-worded message. That clip pissed me off. Too bad I live 2500 miles away--makes taking any sort boycott action against them difficult.

That guy is a total douche-bag. Is that a Boston accent or are his lips still a bit too slippery from his last protein shake? Anyway, this is how I would have handled it:

Co-ed dorm rooms? WTF? What would a guy be thinking when he signed up for that. Ooh, I know. "My roommate is going to be hot and she's going to want to sleep with me." And the girl is going to be all like "Ooh, gender equality is such a wonderful thing. I live in such a progressive world and I'm such a progressive person because I'm going to have a male roommate." Well, guess what honey, unless you're a fugly cow, your roommate is going to want to bang you. And guess what buddy? What are you going to do do when you come home drunk and want to masturbate? Eh? And yeah, sure, roommates in college dorms hook-up all the time. They also have a word for it: date-rape.

in college, I lived in the only all-girls dorm on campus, with a girl. A friend of ours (who happened to have a penis) hated his roommate. Like, his roommate would steal things. So he basically lived with us. He slept in a sleeping bag on our floor nearly every night. He was a great guy and if I could have chosen him over my real roommate, I totally would have. Oh, and to my knowledge in no combination did I, my roommate, or our sort-of-roommate ever have sex. Nor were any of us gay: we simply handled the situation like adults. Sure, I think there are some people who would take advantage of this, but in general, I think it's a grea thing.

And it does appear that nearly everyone who works for Fox is an ass

This douche reminds me of the usual guy reaction of "she's not my type anyway" to getting shot down.

Except he's pretty much saying it about all women.

I don't understand... the only thing they mention is how much a guy would suffer living with a girl. Do they forget that boys can be annoying to live with also?

What kind of "fair and balanced" is it when the whole piece is about what a bad idea coed dorms are. How about showing the other point of view? How about maybe talking to a student or two?

Goudie has a good chance of remaining a virgin even after he decides not to be.

My friend sent me a link to this, and it pissed me off so much even I blogged about it. (Usually I like to stick to just reading feminist blogs rather than commenting myself - there are people way more qualified than I to write about this stuff.)

Oh man. He pretty much hit every gender stereotype ever!

One thing I haven't seen really mentioned (prairielily mentioned it) is that perhaps this might be in part to make transgender students feel more comfortable?

Shit man. I go to Harvard and I live with two women. Does this mean I have a vagina? If so, how come I'm not getting any use out of it? I feel cheated!

Goudie has a good chance of remaining a virgin even after he decides not to be.

Hahah Yeah, but actually I'm not sure he's a wilfull virgin. It might have something to do with the fact that no-one would ever touch him with a 10-foot pole. So he has to pretend he's not interested because "girlz are icky" or something. I thought they passed that phase after the age of 10...
(I don't have anything against virgins, BTW, I used to be one ;-)).

The subtext of Goudie's rant is that essentially it's a major pain in the ass for any man to have to deal with living with a woman, marriage and cohabitation included - "Life's tough enough once you get into the real world." Ergo, lets give the poor college boys four/five more years of respite from their inescapable fate: the Horrors of Teh Vadge in Da House.

"Virgin Boy," indeed. ;)

ok well, you know guys, i cant see this guys view being popular. most men i know would scoff at him for being a virgin, a prude, immature, and a downright loser. so, not sure i would get upset about this guy, most people, aside from us, would clearly think hes a moron.

god I don't even know where to begin with this! First I was going to say the same thing as whenfishfly, in that the ENTIRE time they are only ranting about what hell on earth it would be to live with a WOMAN. Never once how it might be inconvenient to live with a man.

Second, when the female anchorwoman started saying "Let's face it women are difficult!" I kind of wanted to punch her.

And then alludes to the idea that the ONLY thing a man gets out of marriage is the sex. Because women are just such a freakin hassle, of course the ONLY thing they are good for is sex. If you aren't getting laid then of course it is really not worth it. Nevermind people get married because they are in love, it is all about "the fringe benefits."

I am surprised I managed to watch the entire thing. No one mentions the possibility of date rape, or how is might be strange to try to change clothes with a man in the room. Or anything like that, no just that it is hell on earth to have to put up with women, because women are difficult, and the only reason a man would ever suffer through living with one is because he would be getting sex. UGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

/end rant. *breathes*

Ok. Anyway, I would just like to point out that when you are putting two people in one dorm room, often by the end of the year there may be tension. It doesn't matter if they are the same sex or not.

There are 2 men and 2 women who live in my house, and we all get alone just fine. Everybody, even the ones with the vaginas, are pretty mellow.

oops sorry alone=along. typos.

Ugh, that's disgusting. I like how they totally ignore the fact that *gasp!* not all men are interested in women and vice versa. Not to say I don't think a straight guy and a straight girl can live together in perfect harmony, but there are possible situations in which sexual attraction is not going to be a factor. Geez. I also liked their disbelieving shakes of head when it was said that some college guys have *gasp!* girl friends. Like all college-age men are hormone-crazed monsters who can't relate to women on a human level. . .that's disgusting.
