Most Americans support comprehensive sex ed

I don't know how I missed this one!

A new study
says that most Americans favor comprehensive sex ed (you know, the kind that tells the truth) over abstinence-only bullshittery.

Of the nearly 1,110 U.S. adults they surveyed, 82 percent supported programs that discuss abstinence as well as other methods for preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Half were in outright opposition to abstinence-only education.

Even among self-described conservatives, 70 percent supported comprehensive sex ed., while 40 percent opposed the abstinence-only strategy.

The study is published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

I'm thrilled with comp sex ed in my kids' schools. Thanks in part to it, my husband and I are able to have all sorts of frank and productive conversations with our adolescent children. I have to say that I'm also grateful for those annoying pharma commercials about conditions like genital herpes b/c they also provide openings for good conversations about information everyone should be armed with as they enter the adult world.

So 30% of conservatives don't support comprehensive sex ed, but also don't support abstinence only? I shudder to think what their curriculum would look like.

"So 30% of conservatives don't support comprehensive sex ed, but also don't support abstinence only?"

That's not what the statistics in the article say. They just say that 70% support comprehensive, and 40% oppose abstinence only. There is no implication that those two percentages are exclusive of each other (and in fact they can't be, since they add up to more than 100%); they are just two separate pieces of data and we have no idea from that data whether the 30% that don't support comprehensive do or do not support abstinence only. The 40% that oppose abstinence only could in fact be a subset of the 70% who support comprehensive.

Those that agree to abstinence-only are just trying to encourage their fellow Conservatives to outbreed we Mexicans! grrr...
