AMEN.

Jessica, I'm loving this Feminist Flickr thing.

Cheers,

TH

i know; i'm frigging obsessed!

Okay, I have to brag or I'll explode, and this is as good a place as any: A few hours ago, I was elected Secretary of Mississippi NOW. I'm also Public and Community Outreach Chair for Jackson Area NOW. Two hats, one Head. :o)

Cheers,

Congratulations, Tom! Keep up the good fight.

Thanks, EG! You know, I said at the meeting that I saw myself as an ACLU person and thought I'd be doing NOW on the periphery, but what I've gradually discovered is that NOW reflects my values better than any other organization on Earth, near as I can tell. This is a huge honor for me. :o)

Cheers,

TH

Good for you, Tom! Congratulations, and good luck with it!

Congrats, Tom! That's great!

Thanks for this. I feel wonderful! :o)

Cheers,

Congrats, Tom! I knew you've been up to no good lately! ;D

Tom, you represent everything that's wrong with the world. White men aren't supposed to help the reverse racists or the man haters. You're shirking your duty to fight for the rights of European-American men. David Duke says whites are oppressed and Glenn Sacks says so about men, so it must be true.

At any rate, congratulations. Keep up the good work.

Now back to the Flickr photo! Hey, sisters and brothers! Some yahoo named "hujo27" left a link-littered anti-feminist tract in the comment area below Jeff Taff's photo. Anyone interested in countering it? I'm too irritated to take it on, but not too irritated to at least ask someone else to. Someone in a pithy, hellcat mood.

The problem for less-developed countries is that tourism is often presented as one of the only routes to development. But tourism can in fact be a terrible burden on the economy of the destination. There are a number of reasons for this. One is leakage: not much tourist expenditure stays in the economy after taxes, profits and wages are paid outside the area and after imports are purchased. Indeed, of each US$100 spent by a tourist in a developed country, only around US$5 actually stays in that country’s economy. A second reason is the phenomenon of enclave tourism: many tourist packages are ‘all-inclusive’ wherein tourists do not leave their resort or cruise ship. Third, infrastructure improvements – in roads and airports, for example – can cost the government at the expense of local health and education, especially if there is pressure from developers for tax breaks. Fourth, with an increase in the spending power of tourists, prices can rise faster than indigenous wages can accommodate them. Finally, an area can become dependent on tourism and therefore subject to tourism’s vagaries. Other parts of the economy are neglected and the area lacks a healthy diversity. Also, a local tourist industry may be seasonal, meaning instabilities in employment and leaving the economy as a whole vulnerable to climatic instabilities.
