Pro-choicers respond to SD abortion ban victory

It feels good to beat down a campaign of misinformation.

Sarah Stoesz, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota says that “the most impressive thing about this victory is that it was truly a grassroots effort...We had a coalition of men and women, faith leaders, business professionals and healthcare professionals that came together and sent a strong message to their legislators – don't use our state to push an extremist agenda.

Casey Murschel, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, said: "Now, it is time for the same South Dakotans - Republicans, Democrats, and Independents - who defeated this ban to call on legislators and the governor to end these attacks and unify behind commonsense ways to prevent unintended pregnancy and reduce the need for abortion, without threatening women's health or jeopardizing access to safe, legal abortion."

My response:

What I imagine anti-choice, anti-sex nut Leslie Unruh is feeling right now after the jump.

In other news, yay for South Dakota! Take that, Bill Napoli and the rest of your misogynist legislator buddies.

I have long suspected that Sponge Bob was pro-choice, but I'm now glad to have video confirmation. :)

Way to go, pro-choicers. This is a day that will live in infamy.

This would have passed if there was language allowing exception for rape and incest. It's coming back in that form.

There is one aspect of the abortion ban that I have not seen mentioned. It puzzles me why. Fundamentally, beliefs regarding the beginning of life are based on religion, not science. There is no way for anyone to prove when it begins. The First Amendment says, "congress shall make no law ....prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Seems to me we should be arguing for religious freedom, not just choice. The Bill was crafted to protect individuals, even from a majority. These bans and laws defining when life begins are theology, not law and must be defeated on that basis. Each individual must be allowed to make their own moral decisions. Otherwise all we have is moral tyranny and abuse of power.
Judges who seek to use their power to impose their moral choices on us all and who ignore the First Amendment, are the real activists judges. The Warren Court correctly decided Roe V Wade. We must sustain it!

Congress makes laws everyday that prohibit the free exercise thereof if the the free exercise thereof involves harming others. Human sacrific is not allowed, bigamy is not allowed in most states, suicide is not allowed. All are portions of some religions and there are laws against their practice because the government believes the harm they cause is greater than the 1st ammendment right to practice them.

You're missing Ted's point, buffy. The question of whether or not this practice causes harm to anyone is itself a matter of faith, and neither you nor anybody else has the right to inflict their faith on me.
