Bar blogging

I'm at the Park Avenue Country Club (not nearly as fancy as it sounds; it's just a bar) watching the election results with Jill from Feministe, Vanessa and a ton of random Dems.

I'm drinking for democracy; what are you guys up to?

The husband and I are making popcorn and watching election returns. Fun times!

Trying to regain control of the remote so I can watch more election coverage

I just finished watching Veronica Mars, easily the best show on television. I've never seen a tv show display such mastery of dramatic irony. It's a little too stylized, but at the same time I don't think I've seen a tv show since Homicide that was so realistic and broke so many tv taboos. For instance, this year the over-arching story is about a serial rapist at a small college. I know there's a whole Law & Order franchise devoted to sex criems, but they always present it in such a stagey way, just like they present "race" in a such a stagey and stilted way.

Oh, and apparently there's some kind of election going on. I'm going to put some tonic water in the refrigerator to have on hand in case the Republicans retain control of both houses.

Yeah, I'm "blogging" from my blackberry...I am officially a huge dork.

Trying to remember that it is better to stay here and fight to make things better than to pack it up and move to another state.

Tennessee's hateful Amendment 1 has passed by an overwhelming majority (81% with 63% reporting). I expected it to pass - but fuck!

And Ford, Jr. vs. Corker is so close that there's no telling how it will turn out. Hopefully Memphis (which is Ford's) will come through big time.

I am drinking beer and eating taco dip from my couch, with laptop and tv both on.

The election is my superbowl.

Heraclitus, I just watched Veronica Mars too! I'm really not liking how the feminists and Veronica are being portrayed this year, but the Season 1 episode where Veronica was trying to figure out who raped her, plus the follow-up on it from the Season 2 finale was some of the best television I've ever seen.

Good luck on your voting, everyone! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting.

I'm checking election returns on my computer. Thank the FSM for CNN's website.

Hi, prairielily. Not to derail this into Veronic Mars-speak, but I actually kind of like way Veronica has been "played" by some of the campus folk. I think it's interesting and a good development to have her now dealing with forces and motives she can't fully understand or control. One of the things that bothered me about the show was how dishonest and manipulative she always was. I know she fights for justice, but it was still a bit much for me. Felt too..capitalist, or something (though the product placement is still out of control).

I only realized just now, from reading your comment, that last year (the first year I watched the show) was its second season. (I kept wondering how I had missed all those episodes shown in flashbacks.) I agree with you, the finale was amazing. Not only emotion of her confronting her rapist, but the sheer surprise of who it was.

I'm torn between buying the first two seasons now and my embarrassment in delighting in what seems to be such a high school-oriented show--although it's clearly so much more.

I think we've already derailed it, unless you want to suggest another forum for this discussion?

My problem with Veronica is that she's been rather rude and full of herself this season. She's been rude to people she really doesn't need to be rude to, she's made judgements on people (Parker and the sorority come to mind) and she's jumped to conclusions, unfairly accusing people.

If you can go back and watch the first season, it's amazing. There, you have a teenage girl who is completely driven to find her best friend's real killer brought to justice. In the rape episode, we see how everyone ended up being somewhat complicit in it, even by simply ignoring her state. It was a real testament to how rape affects its victims.

If it makes you feel better, think of the strong female role model.

On topic, I'm happy we seem to be winning on the abortion issue in South Dakota, but the same sex marriage bans? FUCK. Why do people get so inflamed that they're willing to ban something that they would never notice on a daily basis? (Let's be honest... people who want to ban same sex marriage don't come within fifty feet of same sex couples. Their "homosexual cooties" might rub off and make them tolerant.)

I actually like the fact that Veronica's been wrong this year. I hate to say something like "she's growing," but I'm glad she's been thrown a bit by her new surroundings (although I don't think she can reasonably blame herself for not stopping Parker's rape). I will definitely get Season One; I just have to make peace with the fact that I watch a show with a character named "Logan."

Oh, and I definitely find Veronica's character very sympathetic, and I like and agree with the basic moral asthetic of the show (pettiness, callousness and self-righteousness suck). I was just sometimes mildly bothered by the way she would use people. But that's definitely secondary to her good qualities.

Veronica Mars notwithstanding

YEARGHHHHH! The House and maybe the Senate! Speaker Pelosi! No Democratic incumbent losses! No ban on abortion! I can sleep easier tonight.

What was I up to? I was on the radio for three hours reporting election results.

I was co-host of WHPK's "November Election 2006" election show and political roundtable, on Chicago's south side, last night from 7pm to 10pm central tim. It was great. Lots of interesting discussion.

I was particularly stunned by McCaskill's win in Missouri. She had been trailing (pretty badly, it would appear) for much of the evening. Good that she got a win.
