Just when you thought they couldn't top the "Women can still take EC!" argument...
This is absolutely infuriating, because these are undoubtedly physicians who refuse to write prescriptions for emergency contraception. Apparently saying that science proves life begins at conception is their idea of "clarify[ing] some of the issues surrounding abortion."
As for the abortion-banners' totally baseless claim that "96% of women who have abortions are using it as birth control"... Ema does their homework for them, and digs up the research on birth-control use and reasons South Dakota women cite for choosing abortion. She notes:
The South Dakota Department of Health, Office of Data, Statistics, and Vital Records (.pdf) report contains no data on birth control use in women obtaining an abortion in SD (a glaring omission, in my opinion). Unless Sen. Napoli is privy to information not available to the South Dakota Department of Health, Office of Data, Statistics, and Vital Records, his statement to the voters of SD that they are actually voting for...abortion as a means of birth control is aliemistruth.
Indeed.

Oh, boy. More proof that it's OK to lie for Jesus.
Not to say that I don't think women should be able to get abortions up until the beginning of the third trimester, which i do, but...
"abortion stops a beating heart." really? because you just said that life starts at conception. i'm sorry, but the fetus doesnt even start to develop a heart beat until the second month of pregnancy. so not, not all abortions "stop a beating heart."
also, wtf is this shit with life starting at conception. this means that if you seek out an egg donation, you're a killer. really. they fertilize several eggs, since the chances are low that just one will implant. this means you're dooming a living embryo to death (and are therefore a MURDERER!) when, in all actuality, you're just trying to create life. it's backwards. there is no proof that life "starts" at conception. this is a social debate, the very verdict of roe v. wade, and i'm angry that these doctors are presenting it as fact.
This is indeed very disturbing, and I did some quick Google searches on some of the doctors named (probably spending more time than I can rationalize, but whatever). Clean Cut Kid has some great entries about the individual doctors and their political and family connections. Also, elsewhere in my search, I found the explanation of how life "begins" at conception as something about life beginning with the creation of a unique DNA code, NOT a heartbeat. Fascinating.
Also of interest, one of the doctors, Brian Kidman, is reported as having a not-for-profit clinic where the range of services includes a "prayer team". He is reportedly planning "outreach" to nearby communities of Native Americans and "internationals," whatever that means! He reportedly received a donation of equipment from the "outreach" (i.e. missionary) organization Christ for Humanity (check out their paternalistic web site and newsletter where they assert Our Lord as having performed miracles and such)...just, you know, further proof of the doctors' solid SCIENTIFIC credentials. Sigh.
Beardy McGlasses says "science now proves that life begins at conception." What a perfect example of tautology. Sticking the word "science" in front of something does not a rational argument make. Bacteria are "life". Mosquitos are life. That ham sandwich you're eating was once many forms of life.
Guess what! Science also proves that people die when something kills them. There, I'm glad we've cleared that up, and we can all stop agruing about war, famine, disease, and politics once and for all.
Next up: how to play the flute.
Okay, now that I have stopped screaming, I guess I can comment.
Since when does the idea that life begin at conception a scientific fact? I think those working on embryonic stem cell research and those who have taped eggs getting fertilized in petri dishes, don't think they are taking human lives.
In reference to the person who posted above, a "fetus" does have a beating heart after 3 weeks. However its a primitive one chambered heart. I don't think it should really even be an issue. Women have the right to get abortions during any period of pregnancy, with the exception of the third trimester, according to Roe V. Wade for any reason. So it shouldn't matter if the heart is beating or not and only contributes to this idea of the pro-lifers that a fetus is an independent being from the mother.
i was going to look up the doctors to see how reputable (or not reputable) they are. happens another blog has already done the work here. A few of the docs can not be found on the internet as being doctors in SD, one is a pediatric cardiologist, one is the director of a "wellness" clinic that offers an abortion support group entitles "Healing from Abortion" and also has a pretty interesting "statement of faith" funny i like my doctors to practice medicine not faith. scary scary stuff.
and of course this happening in one of the most rural states with one of the largest percentage of native americans. so lets give people with few options one less. that makes a lot of sense.
Well, I wonder how many of these doctors would - or could - prescribe emergency contraception for South Dakota patients, given that 3 of the 9 aren't licensed in the state, most are pediatricians, and only one (Seger) appears to be an ob/gyn. But hey, do your own research:

Life begins with the guy flirting with you at the office. Life begins with dinner and a movie.
It's not a concern for life, it's always about the precious sperm. Notice there's never an outcry from women to save and protect their precious eggs or even zygotes.
No, you're wrong Donna, it IS a concern for life, because that life could very well be a BOY!
*grumble* *grumble*
And here I was hoping these were just a bunch of actors. As a med student, I can say that I like my education kosher, that is, served on a (completely) separate plate than religion. Geesh, doesn't anyone remember the last time religion and politics were so intermingled? You know, when women were burned at the stake? I suppose that would be OK with this administration...
I wonder what all these fine doctors would say about their skyrocketing teen pregnancy rate? I don't believe for a second that any one of them would actually prescribe EC to a woman.
and if that is not bad enough, now nicaragua is about to outlaw abortion (a la el salvador). great.

Come on... abortion clearly is a form of birth control. Just think about what the phrase 'birth control' means.
Leederick, yes it is *A* form of birth control. But it's very rarely anyone's primary method, which is what these doctors insinuate. It always blows my mind when people act like women just get abortions every month rather than using other forms of birth control. At $600 per month in my state, that just isn't cost-effective.
Also, aren't the sperm and the egg alive when they're separate as well? Ja... Oh, right, god didn't instill life into those two cells individually; only together did he place his finger upon them. Right.
