Anti-choicers promote EC

... but only because they decided it'll help them pass the South Dakota abortion ban. (Quick, somebody tell Will Saletan!) I bet they're simultaneously drafting state legislation to allow pharmacists and medical professionals to refuse to dispense it.

This ad, paid for by an anti-choice group, constantly harps on the fact that the morning-after pill is still technically legal, even if abortion isn't. These hypocrites completely disgust me. As if a single person who supports or helped create this ad has EVER done anything to increase women's access to emergencry contraception. Ugh.

If you can put aside the hypocrisy involved, I guess it's sort of an advertisement for the morning-after pill -- something we definitely want to raise women's awareness about.

UPDATE: As I guessed, the group that created this ad was instrumental last year in blocking a bill last to require info about EC in all South Dakota ERs. They also helped pass a law allowing pharmacists to refuse to dispense the drug. I'm also not surprised to learn that abstinence-only cheerleader Leslee Unruh is heading up this hypocritical campaign.

This astonishes me, and you know, everything else aside, I hope this indicates a trend. I would LOVE it if the anti-choice movement would finally concede the EC fight.

Yeah, not holding my breath. But this sort of thing definitely doesn't help the cause of people who want to make EC more difficult to access.

Ugh, this makes me sick inside. The morning after pill is for emergencies but sometimes regular BC fails and the partners don't realize it. Should everyone take EC after every sexual encounter?

No, of course not, but no one will dare make a case for women who haven't been a victem of rape or incest who do not want to carry a child. Very few people will even TOUCH that in support and even in pro-choice debates, the focus often revolves around "innocent" women who were victimized by sex. Obviously all women want to bear children deep down inside so safe abortion to protect her health and future from an unwanted pregnancy is a moot point? Ugh I'm disgusted.

Yeah, there's definitely some of Napoli's "sodomized virgin" logic in there. I don't like the commercial as what it is; what I do like about it is that it concedes the point that EC should be legal, which (a) splits the "pro-life" movement in two, and (b) establishes a precedent by which we can push for wider availability of EC. In particular, the commercial falsely implies that women who have been raped will be informed about their option of taking EC. South Dakota's pro-choicers can now take this commercial and go "Even Voteforlife.com said..."

That's a good point, Tom. Even if the abortion ban ballot initiative passes, pro-choice groups in the state can use this language against them when pushing for greater EC access.

Ugh. This really pisses me off. Because there is a pill that may be able to prevent pregnancy in rape victims and women who do not want to have children, thats a reason for why women should not have abortion access? And since when is not having abortion access BETTER for women's health? What about the women who may phyiscally NEED abortions? What about the women who have been raped, but were unable or afraid to go to the right location and get EC...what about or rights to make our own medical decisions?

I would not be thinking the mention of EC as even a remote victory.

Emergency contraception is just that, for emergencies. Its not something all women can or should take after every sexual encounter. Plenty of accidents happen without the parties involved becoming aware and even responsible use of birth control has its risks.

Rape victims know to use EC but what about regular women who do not want to have a child and don't know that their BC failed until its too late?

The focus that rape victims are the only ones who deserve abortions makes me sick inside. I think many pro-choicers only further this myth when they retort to prolife arguments with examples of rape victims or think that perhaps an abortion ban would be ok with EC availible.
