Apparently, crime committed by youth is the fault of their parents. And not only that, because of this, we should sterilize the mothers of these children. What solid logic.
A City Council member, reacting to a video store holdup believed to have been carried out by children, says parents who can't properly care for their kids should be sterilized."We pick up stray animals and spay them," Larry Shirley said in a story published Saturday by The Post and Courier of Charleston. "These mothers need to be spayed if they can't take care of theirs. Once they have a child and it's running the street, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable."
Spay?! It is pretty clear to me here who need not be reproducing. Because surely it is not lack of resources, poor educational access and a racist and sexist system that is producing the *criminal* children. It is young, poor, probably non-white moms. Funny how racist, classist and sexist logic works. The man sees a store get robbed and his immediate reaction is to blame the mothers, not actually think about what is really causing inequity, or how he himself is implicated in it.

"What we've got is a failure in society, whether it's in Mount Pleasant with yuppie parents or whether it's on the East Side with poor crackhead parents," he said, referring to areas in and around Charleston.
Yes and our failure in society has nothing to do with our failure in leadership.

Charleston is a hardcore racist town. Like Allen in Virginia, when the "right" becomes the "far-right" that means that what is perceived as generally unacceptable language and facist behavior rise to the top more readily than in most regions. Its a shame, really. Usually you get these nut jobs from the rural areas. Much of the South is really represented by blue islands (Nashville, Memphis, Lexington, Louisville, Charlotte, Ashville etc.) in red seas.
Well, if we're going to "spay" the moms, wouldn't it be fair to "neuter" the dads, too? Comparing (presumably) single moms to stray animals is low, not to mention uncreative.
Yeah, it's almost profound how simply he ignores dads in the whole equation. Sexism on top of an essentially exterminationist and openly dehumanizing policy, I know, but it's just more evidence of the mind spinning out of control.
I bet he is Pro-Life, too.
Neutering would be far more safe, inexpensive and effective. I think we should start with this racist, sexist asshole. His little thugs are the ones who will no doubt grow up to poop Republican garbage all over the place.

After the article refered to bad parenting, I was shocked (shocked!) that only mothers were mentioned. Why aren't we "neutering" the dads? As Sylke points out, it's safer and cheaper...
The only thing worse than what this guy said is the way most people on the Yahoo discussion board are responding to it. I'm not sure if they are trying to be funny (I doubt it) or if it is how they actually feel, but either way it is pretty damn depressing.

I know that South Carolina seems disturbing racist. Since I work near the Capital complex with the Confederate flag waving in front, I see that everyday. However, Columbia and Charleston are the liberal strongholds in South Carolina. It is the rural areas that screwed us over. I know that in the last elections, it was very close in both cities. If I remember correctly, Bush lost in Columbia.
The few liberals here are struggling to deal with the bible-thumping, sexist, racist bullshit these people come up with. However, please do not disregard the whole state or at least the best towns because of a few jerks who have no business in authoritative positions.
By the way, I am an officer for the Columbia NOW Chapter and I happen to know that some people are trying to restart the Charleston NOW Chapter. So, at our next meeting, we will be discussing options for this as well. There is some hope here. Of course, there is the problem of all the liberals wanting to leave. Just the idea of living in a location where a liberal bumper sticker doesn't get my windshield smashed in is wonderful.

I had a neighbor, a single father of two children. They're 12 (twins). He doesn't take care of them, as far as making sure there's food in the kitchen, or that the home is kept in order, or, just, in general, that things that need to be taken care of are. He'd rather run off and go drinking the whole weekend than take care of them. They'll be alone and sometimes, accidentally locked out the whole time.
Their mother isn't in their life. She was for a little while, but that ended because she was stealing from them to fuel her drug addiction.
And yet, when it comes to forced sterilization, this is what comes up. Fucking poor people, blah blah blah. How about people who clearly can't take basic care of their kids? People who neglect, beat, rape and sometimes even kill their kids? Why aren't the men and women who do these things the ones people talk about sterilizing?
Money doesn't make a decent parent. It takes someone who gives a shit to love and care for their children.
