South Dakota abortion ban clip
It's a must-watch; it even contains the infamous Napoli interview where he says that only religious virgins who were raped and sodomized ("savaged") should be able to get abortions.
(Crooks and Liars had the video up a while ago, but I figure it's worth a replay.)

Um. Hrm. But... but sodomy doesn't make one pregnant.
*brain hurts*
cerebrate, dammit, you beat me to it!! ;)
i wonder how often shotgun marriages involve domestic violence as opposed to marriages where there's no coercion involved?
How do people not recognize the hatred propelling this legislation? Why do so many accept and support legislated hate? Though I monitor this issue and had heard of the infamous speech, I had not seen this video. To witness such unabashed disregrad for women's lives from someone who owes his elected position in part to women is beyond infuriating. It's completely disheartening.
Some days it's harder than others to keep up the fight...though we must.
I could really use something goofy to make me laugh after seeing that.
"How do people not recognize the hatred propelling this legislation? Why do so many accept and support legislated hate?" - I don't see hate here, I just see stupidity and the blind devotion to religious dogma.
shit's so over the top it's funny. i love the reaction on the reporter's face.
did he say he's from "the wild west"?
noname,
You don't see this legislation as misogynistic?
Listening to this guy's rape scenario, I wonder how long he's been thinking about it. It takes a pretty sick mind to think up an episode like that and actually verbalize it and use it as a justification. It sounds like a sadist's wet dream.
It would be easy for me to laugh at the case in SD but honestly, I'm more scared than anything. It’s so clear that this is out right war. What isn’t clear is that we will win if it ever does get to the nearly all male Supreme Court.
If the Supreme Court screws women over, I vote that all reasonable-minded people move to California and we secede ;)
I mean, with the 6th-largest economy in the world, we could totally take care of ourselves.
Law Fairy,
I second that. Many times while watching the news (i.e. the Daily Show;) or reading this blog I find myself wondering just *if* california suceded would I have my parents move here. But it is just a day dream. Another day dream is giving these people a state unto themselves (texas? south dakota?)where they could govern as they choose while they left the rest of us alone. *sigh*
His gross stipulations on rape (virgin, christian, intending to save said virginity for marriage, sodomized as well as raped)made me want to slap him. I wonder what he would say if it was the girls intended husband who had done the horrific raping? Would there still be an allowance for abortion or would it be a shotgun wedding in the hopes that they could make a go of it? I bet he'd peel back divorce laws as well so that once you're married you can't get out of it (unless of course you're a guy who finds himself a younger wife). Gawd this upsets me.
I find it disturbing that this man's intent and purpose is propelled by some kind of back-in-the-day fantasy, almost as if he wished Mayberry were real and problems wouldn't even have to be swept under the rug because they could be nipped in the bud by misogynistic legislation.
He's not even a tool, he's the whole damn Home Depot.
"He's not even a tool, he's the whole damn Home Depot."
I'm taking this one and filing it somewhere. Awesome :)
Gee, I wonder why that divorce rate went up later...wonder if it had to do with that period when men got a girl pregnant out of wedlock and the whole damned neighborhood forced them to marry...
That man's description of a rape is totally outrageous. It's just further proof to me that he is totally out of touch with the reality of women's lives.
I'll take it further - super conservatives like that clown are out of touch with reality at large. He's ACTUALLY pining for a time when people were forced into doomed, unhappy marriages because of an accidental pregnancy? He thinks that WORKS?
Oh yeah, and he grew up in the "Wild West". He's delusional.
Saying he's delusional is slightly dismissive. Yes, he's out of his mind, but he's powerful, and unfortunately, we need to take him seriously.
Well shoot, I guess if I'm a NON-RELIGIOUS virgin who is brutally raped, I guess I'm out of luck. Or what if I'm super religious, but "re-virginized?" Would he make me marry my attacker?
I think this guy wacks it to the image of his "brutal virgin rape." Seriously. He seems to put an awful lot of thought into an ordeal and a procedure he himself will never, ever have to endure.
I can't believe, in this day and age, that we're still allowing knuckle draggers like this on a podium.
I was ready to patronizingly dismiss the interview with some pithy comment, but shit; that just gave me chills. May God forgive them.
That makes my skin crawl. I feel so bad for that lone pro-choice legislator, fighting against people like that.
