I don't know how to do the nifty picture thing, but this is my current You Tube favorite, a 1974 commercial for enforcement of the equal pay act starring Batman, Robin, and Batgirl.

Holy Act of Congress!

this is amazing...i'm posting now.

With an outfit like that, Wondder Woman was definitely ahead of her time (re: the Second Wave curve) and a Third Wave pioneer. I can't help but wonder, though, whether her early popularity had more to do with submissive men lapping up the idea than the emerging acceptability of a major, female protagonist.

I have to say, who cares what submissive men thought? Women and girls have always liked WW, and feminists have always found her inspiring. I loved that show when I was a little girl--though Steve was such a lame waste of space. I couldn't figure out why WW bothered to save him week after week.

I'm not certain that The Bourbs was alluding to Wonder Woman's creator, William Moulton, or whether he just stumbled into it, but the character was in part created to appeal to submissive males. Although Moulton did so less for sales and more because he thought female dominance would lead to world peace, or something. Also, he was a polygamist. Actually, it's a pretty weird story, if you've never heard it. Here:

"Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world." Marston believed that submission to "loving authority" was the key to overcoming mankind's violent urges, and that strong, self-realized women were the hope for a better future. Wonder Woman was very consciously Marston's means of spreading these notions to impressionable young minds. As he said to Olive Richard, "I tell you, my inquiring friend, there's great hope for this world. Women will win!" He then goes on, "When women rule, there won't be any more [war] because the girls won't want to waste time killing men...I regard that as the greatest - no, even more - as the only hope for permanent peace."

This guy was a bottom.
