Offensive as hell.
Where is this from? I'm trying to decide how outraged to be.
i don't think it's meant to be offensive--it was put together to show how crazy shit was back in the day.
LOL.
I didn't mean that the people who compiled it were offensive - just that the source material is offensive.
Where did they get all that from? The 40's? 50's? 60's? How recent are these lovely displays of mysogeny?
my bad. ;)
i WISH i knew where all those clips came from...
Especially the mail-order bride commercial.
And the sweet commentary on how "studious looking" girls are ugly and unsexy.
Heh, ahh...folksy ol' sexism, from the good ol' days when a boss could pat a girl on her rump, or take sexual advantage of her while paying her far less than her male counter-parts without serious legal reprecussions.
"And next time, be a man. Being a man is more than big muscles and a fast brain..." - aww, they're flirting!
"You won't be an admiral, but you may be the admiral's secretary" - a position of even more power, if you can forge handwriting well!
Oh, and the women in the boxes is just too surreal for words.
Seriously, I loved how the menial work is "preferred" for women.
Because they didn't PAY them as much. *breaks out the Aleve*
I've seen the whole of the one with the studious girl. I wish I remembered where...
I wish I could laugh at this. It should be hilarously out-of-date. But just last year my hometown paper of a mid sized city added a "For Women Only" section.
It deals only with the things that us girls are interested in, you know, like fashion or decorating or cooking. What girl can pass up a new receipe!
The thing I find so sad and why I think we have to take this shit seriously is that there are still some many people in power who think this way.
I know where one of the clips comes from. It's from an old educational film on grooming. The MST3K version of the film can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLkOEBmi6po
Lizard, did you notice that the flirtacious guy behind the desk was not just a sergeant, but an "SM" sergeant? I guess that was James Guckert's job title, back when he wasn't a Marine.
But if you want to be really offended, check out the "educational videos" posted at http://www.pamagazine.net
o_O
What. Is. That?
PA Magazine? Never heard of it. Very disturbing. Tell me it's just some obscure soft-core porn site?
OMG!My mouth dropped! I'm pissed!
wow. i feel really grateful to our moms and grandmas for enduring this shit and paving the way for all of us to get whatever jobs we want.
this video made me want to grab more power just to do it.
How is this any different from the republican party/christian/conservative ideology of womens roles ??
Is this not a day in the life of most republican senators and their families?
Meri -- Thanks for the MST3K link. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it seems great so far. I actually laughed out loud at the "You know, people where *whiter* back then..." comment. Wow.
I can tell you exactly when the footage of the not-sexy studious girl came from. That was 1955 - 57. I was that girl. To the life. Except, strangely, I had boyfriends. To use the then-current euphemism.
If you wish to see the original material that was used to create this film, go to:

In the "Shot List" under "_Clip Sources_" there is a list of web addresses that refer back to films preserved by the prelinger archive (so all the source films are available online). Amazing what was recently accepted as truth.
