Most disappointing prank call ever

I got my first anti-feminist prank call! Unfortunately, it's the lamest thing ever.

You would think that someone who went through the trouble of finding my phone number would actually leave an interesting message. But no, I get "girls are silly," and "they get their periods." What a fucking letdown.

Boo! They could at least have made more of an effort.

i know! i guess the only antifeminists that care about be are drunk frat boys. sniff...

God. That is lame. But, I guess you can't exactly expect their type to be very clever, huh?

Wow, that would be disappointing.

"They get their periods?" Geez, what a lame-o.

I think they expected mass outrage from a bunch of "crazy feminists".

I don't think they realized that in a world in which millions women have their genitalia sliced up, a third of college males say they would be willing to rape if they could get away with it, and domestic violence is downright routine, that their little poke at feminism wouldn't be considered shocking nor horrific.

ghostorchid - what's the source for that "a third of college males" thing? It's not that I doubt you as much as that it scares the living daylights out of me, so I would prefer to check the source before I decide whether or not to freak out about it. Thanks.

I think someone in the sandbox has a crush on Jessica...

DT:

SHARPP actually claims that the number is 51%, and that 15% have actually been involved with coercive sex. I can't get my hands on the actual study quoted, so I don't know how accurate that actually is. I'm a little suspicious that the numbers have been inflated.

The 1992 Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues noted that 1 in 12 college men admitted to acts that met the legal definition of rape, but only 1% thought they had committed a criminal act. I don't know how that study was set up, either, but I find that number somewhat more plausible.

A 1996 study noted that college women have roughly a 1 in 4 chance of experiencing rape or attempted rape before they graduate.

Wow. That is monumentally stupid.

Jessica - I feel bad that you were unfulfilled by your first crank call, so I found a couple of insults for you. See, some of us do care. There are a couple of other jokes tossed in for good measure. Enjoy.

Why dont women need skis?
-Because there is no snow between the kitchen and the laundry room

How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
-Trick question...feminists can't change anything

...and a few jokes:

A radical feminist is getting on a bus when, just in front of her, a man gets up from his seat. She thinks to herself, "Here's another man trying to keep up the customs of a patriarchal society by offering a poor, defenseless woman his seat," and she pushes him back onto the seat.

A few minutes later, the man tries to get up again. She is insulted again and refuses to let him up. Finally, the man says, "Look, lady, you've got to let me get up. I'm two miles past my stop already."

Never trust a man who says he's the boss at home. He probably lies about other things as well.

Q: What is the fastest way to a man's heart?

A: Through his chest with a sharp knife.

Have a wonderful day!

or...

how many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
that's not funny!

or..

it's not the light bulb that needs changing.

or...
two. one to change the light bulb, and one to write about how it felt.

or..
11. 5 to make a support group. 5 more to complain about it, and 1 to secretly get her boyfriend to do it for her

or...
Four. One to change the bulb, and three to write about how the bulb is exploiting the socket.

or...
100-one to do it and the other 99 to say that the bulb screwer does not
represent mainstream feminism in doing so.

That caller is so obviously sloshed that I'm kind of surprised he got his fingers on the right numbers.

Cheers,

TH

Jessica - while sad, disgusting, disturbing, etc. you need to face facts - someone's got a crush on you, someone's got a crush on you!
La la la la!

Jessica:

For some reason, I am now envisioning you in Faye's role in this QC comic.

We will all drown in a sea of recursive stomach juices.

I'm hesitant to embrace the statistic because with any survey that doesn't report the results in terms of the verbatim question that was asked it's not difficult to word the question to get more or less the result you want. If 1/3 of students tell a researcher they'd "make a woman have sex with them" if they could get away with it, it's probably accurate. If the question used the word "rape" the number is probably low, since people are less likely to recognize activities they'd do as rape than as making-a-woman-have-sex; conversely, one could probably come up with a question that would produce "yes" answers from people who, even if they could get away with it, would not, in fact, be open to violating a woman's bodily integrity or sexual autonomy on an individual level -- much less do anything that meets the legal definition of "rape."

Charles:

By description, the 1992 study was designed specifically to address this, by making the questions about actions that would meet the specific requirements of legal rape. That was one of the direct points of the study. I don't have access to the study itself, so I can't verify this. However (and please don't take offense), I'm a little suspicious that one of the major points of the study is applying to you -- you seem to be implying that being willing to "make a woman have sex" (and I don't know how to read that line without it implying coercion somewhere) somehow doesn't involve violating a woman's sexual autonomy.

If that is, in fact, what you were implying, I think the fact that people can think this way is a very large part of the problem. Coercion into sex, even if it doesn't come in one of the specific forms forbidden by law, is not acceptable.

Oh my god, so lame! I am funnier than that guy when I sharpen a pencil.

While every city needs to be imaginative, some need to be doubly so. They must self-create through inventiveness, but to begin the process they must overcome the culture of constraint.

This means a subtle shift in mindset, which is the order within which people structure their worlds and how they make choices, both practical and idealistic, based on values, philosophy, traditions and aspirations. Mindset is our accustomed, convenient way of thinking and our guide to decision-making. Mindset is the settled summary of our prejudices and priorities and the rationalizations we give them.
