Shocker of the day.

Check out the Guttmacher Institute’s latest report on the soon-to-be end of the abortion decline in the U.S.

Between 2000 and 2003, the abortion rate declined by an average of only 0.8% per year; the 0.6% decline in 2002–2003 was the smallest in those three years. By comparison, the abortion rate declined by 3.4% per year in the early and mid-1990s.

Gee, I wonder why we’re losing our ability to prevent unintended pregnancies?

Additionally, there’s been a significant rise of the number of abortions among poor women.

I am happy that this is coming out. Between these wasteful abstinence only education and overlooking contraceptive services for poorer women. Bush won't care though, zealots rarely pay attention to facts.

Of course to follow up on my comment- it would be unfair to place this all on Bush (a little dramatic). I am pointing out that many (democrats and republicans) who support abstinence only education put many women at risk. It is like they want to hide it and deny sex even exists! When two teenagers start to fool around, that 'abstinence' bridge has already failed-what would be best is some pre-planning, as well as some protection if things start to get carried away. I don't ever remeber our sex ed teacher in high school comprehensively explaining plan B. He did encourage abstinence, but knowing what I know now would have preferred a lot more information-I'm sure many youth could benefit from it as well.

While I agree that abstinence-only education is bullshit, I'd like to point out that most of these unplanned pregnancies occur not in teens, but in women in their 20s and 30s. The real problem isn't youth, it's poverty. Women and teens without money are increasingly without options.
