According to last year's statistics on HIV/AIDS infection in South Africa it seems that pregnant women are the fastest growing segment of the population to become infected.

The department of health says its figures for 2005 show that HIV prevalence has increased by the largest figure among pregnant women aged 35 to 39.

The department has released the figures of its annual HIV and syphilis prevalence survey on its website. The statistics show that HIV prevalence among women aged 35 to 39 climbed by 4% in 2005 compared to the 2004 figures.

All together they found that 5.5 million folks are living with HIV/AIDS.

Damn.

My friend was in the Peace Corps in South Africa teaching for two years and she went to many funerals in that time for fellow teachers who died of AIDS. She told me that it was a fairly common belief that a cure for AIDS was having sex with a virgin. And that rape was extremely common. So much more needs to be done in South Africa beyond just telling them "just abstain."
