NOW's 40th B-Day

This weekend I'll be heading up to Albany for the National Organization for Women's annual conference and Young Feminist Summit. They'll also be celebrating their 40th anniversary!

Cool fact: I'm doing a panel with Amanda and Liza on feminism and blogging. Should be fun.

Related: The Christian Science Monitor has an article up today about the history of NOW and where it's headed. (Full disclosure: I'm quoted in it.) Check it out...

"Had enough of those know-it-all 30-something men who dominate the political chatter on the web? Learn how to gather and use political information to bring a gender and class lens to the day's news."

Actually, all the workshops look very interesting. I notice they have one session on dealing with the well-funded "men's rights" groups who take away the children of abused spouses and even avoid child support. Quite topical for some of the posts here recently, I'd say.

(I could do without the one on Pelosi, though. She is an ineffective leader and hopefully will be replaced.)

I think this quote is precious: "It's easy to talk about abortion rights and pay equity, which are obviously important. But poverty is also huge, and child-care is huge, and having to deal with this ridiculous backlash that says, 'Women don't want to work - they want to have lots of babies.'"

The feminist movement today seems a lot better connected to other social movements than it used to be. Right now even NOW talks a lot about poverty and workers' rights and health care, even if it still talks about abortion and the wage gap more.

Now I'm getting annoyed that I won't be able to hear you speak at the Summit.
