Ah, Disney.

womenanimators.jpg

While this was back in 1939, it's notable nonetheless. This letter from Disney Animation Studios was sent to Lillian Friedman (the first female American animator) after she applied for a job there.

I love the tautological reasoning: women don't do that work because it's only done by men.
I don't generally follow Disney. Have they made any progress since the Little Mermaid in their portrayal of female characters?

kgsavoie, sort of. They've had Mulan, and Kim Possible, but they've also gone the other way. Personally, I think Kim Possible has made a lot of Disney's crimes forgivable.

That's good to know! Is it Netflix-worthy?

The various kids on "Recess," are pretty cool too.

I'm not sure Kim Possible would be on Netflix... it's a series. But they did make a couple of TV movies for it, and they were both quite good.

It's a zany cartoon that is pretty unrealistic in that animated way (there's an episode where the villain Drakken tries to take over Canada with a weather machine and rename it Drakkanada) and also has a female protagonist that is both a cheerleader and a superhero. I just think it's great that little girls are watching Kim, whose motto is, "I can do anything!"

Interestingly, people always make fun of me about how much I like it, but I've yet to find anyone who didn't enjoy it when they finally saw it.

If people who comment on the same blog as you count, then you just have. I'm somewhat of a TV/cinema snob, so I tend to be picky about which female-protagonist series I praise; Kim Possible doesn't really make the cut.

I should add that on the other hand, Mulan's a pretty good strong-female-protagonist movie.

You can get quite a few of the Kim Possible movies on Netflix - and I highly recommend you do. We just got "So the Drama" today and the whole family can't wait to watch it tomorrow.

As far as kids' shows go, I think it's one of the best.
It's really fun, silly show that presents women and girls well. Kim is smart, funny, kind, and athletic. It is also worth noting that her mother is a doctor - who you actually see working from time to time.
