Women's viagra?

AP reports on a new drug being researched and developed by Palatin Technologies could potentially be the viagra for women.

Palatin Technologies of Fort Lee says it has had encouraging results in both men and women with Bremolanotide (breem-oh-LAN'-oh-tyd), which stimulates the brain, rather than the genitals.

The company's director of preclinical development says it may help women who lack desire and have trouble getting aroused.

The brain instead of the genitals? Is it going to convince you that whomever you are sleeping with IS good in bed or some shit or make you forget that you never wanted to sleep with that person in the first place? So many questions....

Broadsheet asks would we even want a drug like this?

For many (ahem) women of a certain age, desire for the partners with whom we have carefully crafted a life can wane. Loss of sexual desire is a very real problem that can cause loved ones to feel personally rejected and sufferers to experience profound depression. Perhaps the drug could be seen as an extension of a phallocentric model of sexuality where the phallus's receptacle needs always be at the ready, regardless of external stimuli or lack thereof, but I as a feminist am glad of the opportunity to control my sexuality and experience the pleasure I'd like to experience again.

Although it's not a frequently encountered condition, female sexual disfunction and anorgasmia exist and deserve treatment.

My dad, a physician, mentioned this drug to me several months ago. He was terrified. He is all for having women that Want To Be Aroused But Can't be able to become aroused rather than frustrated [because there are many couples in which disproportionate sex drives become problematic, and not just in the misogynistic "come on baby, let's have sex some more" "no, I'm not in the mood" stupid sense, in the sense that I personally experienced several months ago when I was on a type of birth control that didn't work well with my libido. It fucks with the self esteem of all parties involved and if it can be helped at least a little, would kick ass]... but wait, I ramble. Coming back to my point.

So my dad mentioned this to me, and do you know what the primary medical concern is about this drug? Not any emotional side-effects, not any physical side-effects, not withdrawal or bad relationships or nausea or... anything. The major concern is that this will be the new Roofies, the new date rape drug. Now, women will not be able to say "I did not want it" because they will have wanted it, no matter how artificially they "wanted" it. This will be So. Problematic.

Laina - Isn't the simple solution to this problem to add a strong taste to the pill so that it can't be masked by a drink?

Noname, it is not a pill, it is, from what I've heard, a nasal spray, or an inhaler-like spray. I may be wrong, but the worry was centered around the fact that it could be sprayed into the air that a woman is breathing, she wouldn't even have to ingest a drink.

Laina - You are absolutely right. Careless post on my part. Thanks for the correction.

The speed of deep regeneration is slow; it takes a generation. It requires value holders who can stick it out for 20 years. Regeneration is too important to be left to the vagaries of the political cycle. Typically, the trajectory of development or renewal in an area starts with a philosophy and then a story – a story of what could be. Often this is prefigured by some temporary actions, such as a market, a bizarre arts event, an old building being brought back to life or a new type of project. Often these are led by urban missionaries, two examples in Britain being Eric Reynolds, whose long track record includes Camden Lock Market, Gabriel’s Wharf and Container City in London,33 and Bill Dunster, the ecoarchitect.

They in turn create settings that the pioneers occupy, examples being Dunster’s Bed-Zed Factory,34 a zero emissions development with 82 residential units in Merton, London, or Ken Yeang’s bioclimatic skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur. The next group codify, replicate and make the innovations into a formula as the mainstreaming begins. Finally, there are those who benefit from the hard work of the innovators. The challenge is to ensure they do not take all the value out of the development.
