Hollaback, girls!

New York magazine talks to the subway pervert who was captured, uh, doing his thing, by a woman with a cellphone camera. He's raw foodist Dan Hoyt (whose name, appropriately, is an anagram for "hand toy"), and he's disgusting:

As for his R-train exploits, Hoyt says, “I’ve met women who enjoy it. After this incident happened, I had a woman tell me, ‘You know, that sounds exciting to me.’ She wouldn’t mind being on the other end.

Uh, maybe Kirstie Alley would be into it. But Thao Nguyen certainly wasn't. Her photo of Hoyt-- and the wide publicity it garnered-- spurred other women to take photos, and inspired some fab feminists to create HollabackNYC, which amounts to public shaming for men who harass women on the street.

This is the first time I've seen a man's response to being "featured" on Hollaback:

In [Hoyt's] account, the perpetrator is Nguyen, who misread his intentions ... and then humiliated him by posting his picture on the Web... “Even so, I wouldn’t imagine somebody throwing it up on the Internet for millions of people and destroying your life like that, he says. “It’s one thing to take it to the police. But on the Internet, I read a lot of people saying, ‘That was not too cool of her. That was really screwed up.’

Actually, masturbating on public transportation is really screwed up. This is why HollabackNYC is such a great idea. Most harassers are totally comfortable saying (or doing) lewd things to women on the street -- but wouldn't want those comments published for the world to see.

I snapped my first-ever photo for the website this weekend (after a group of five guys with a video camera made comments about my ass), and have to say it was incredibly satisfying. Look for my picture of the creeps on Hollaback soon. Let the humiliation begin!

I knew that raw foodist crap was bad for the brain. His brain probably started to rot from a lack of proper nutrition.

I love the HollabackNYC idea-- but I do worry about someone getting sued for defamation. Sure, it's not defamation if your statements about what the person did are true, but you still have to go through the not-fun process of proving it in court. (Sorry to be a wet blanket, because I do LIKE the idea a lot.)

Great website idea. Thankfully there are those of us (guys) that are a bit more evolved than Hand Toy.

And no, I don't eat raw food only.

I get that exhibitionism is a common way of expressing or experiencing sexual desire, but in a subway? that's a little intrusive.

I just finished reading that guy's interview... at one point, he even blamed her for misinterpreting his actions-- he said he wasn't masturbating about her, she just walked in on a session that was already in progress.

and, beyond that, the last passage was so bizarre... basically "she'd like me if she knew me. she'd want to date me." why would anyone want to get to know an obnoxious jackass who blames women for intruding on his subway masturbation sessions, much less date him?

Yeah, I really got a kick out of that last line of his interview too; and how in the whole article it still comes across clear as day that women are still just sex objects to him.

What a wanker.

No, wait...

Cheers,

TH

Ha! I also found this phrasing hilarious:

He’s looking into an alternative therapy called EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which Hoyt believes removes emotional problems like stains from a shirt.

Doesn't he know better than to use a "stain" metaphor in an interview about his subway wankery?

I'd be real careful about this. It's one thing if you catch him in the act in a way that proves he was doing what you say. Posting pictures of some guy without proof is likely to get you hauled up for libel. Truth is defense, but can you prove it?

Do this to the wrong guy, whether he deserves it or not, and he'll bankrupt you.

Shame is an effective tool for punishment and for crime prevention when used properly. Love the site. Wish the law would use humiliation more and prison less for non violent crimes.

This is such a sad thing to see police take advantage of an innocent woman. These policeman
need to be prosecuted to the max.
