Moby takes on Eminem’s misogynist lyrics

And just when you thought the feud was over...

Several years back, Moby called out Eminem for promoting homophobia; now he’s accusing the rapper of misogyny. (Duh.)

Moby’s outrage stems largely from a recent case in which an Eminem fan and impersonator recently was convicted of murdering a woman and stuffing her in a suitcase. The man had just finished a karaoke performance singing Eminem’s music. In his video, “Stan,” Eminem murders a woman he put in the trunk of a car.

If a musician made a record wherein he talked about killing blacks and Jews would he get covered in the press and played on radio and MTV? If the answer is ‘no’ (as it should be), then why is radio and MTV filled with music that has lyrics about killing and brutalizing women and gays?” Moby asks on his Web site. “Any employee of a record company or journalist or radio programmer or MTV employee who has promoted and celebrated misogynistic or homophobic music should be ashamed. You have blood on your hands, and you should be deeply, deeply troubled at the culture that you’ve helped to create.”

I’m not a fan of censorship, but he does have a point about the way Eminem’s music is promoted--particularly on MTV. Is it that violence against women and gay people is somehow more acceptable?

Well it is just so strategic. If he were rapping about say the Communist Manifesto, they would ban it. In fact when he did that super political video about storming Washington with voters and young revolutionaries they banned it.

I am not a fan of censorship either, but it has to be equitable. Instead it is strategic and because women and gays are not that important to the nationalist agenda it doesn't matter.

I agree, but I have to clarify one thing.

In the video for "Stan" Eminem is NOT the person that kills the woman (a pregnant woman, btw) and puts her in a trunk. It's a fan of his that is losing his mind because Eminem won't write him back. In fact, in the song, Eminem tells him that would be a horrible thing to do and to stop right now and get help.

Not a huge Eminem fan, but thought I should clear that up.

As Cecily states, there is the issue of whether the mysogyny in Eminiem is really meant to be intentional or ironic. There probably shoudl be some care to whether or not this is equivalent to the debate over Randy Newman's "Short People." I probably come down on the side of thinking that eminiem is obnoxious and probably shouldn't be celebrated like he is.

But it's not like there aren't a million rappers that shouldn't be celebrated and broadcast over MTV due to their incredibly mysoginistic attitudes. Why single Eminiem out?

Cecily, I think Moby has confused "Stan" with another of Eminem's most popular songs. The song where Eminem puts his wife, Kim, in the trunk of the car and murders her (complete with the sound of her screaming in the background) is called "Kim."

It's an easy mistake to make. Eminem has written so many songs about murdering women and putting them in trunks I get them all muddled in my head sometimes. It's good to learn that in at least one of those songs he is not himself doing the murdering and putting-in-the-trunk thing. Otherwise I might have suspected him of an unhealthy interest in that subject.

Eminem songs are the best but Moby's music is great too. All music downloads are amazing in the right atmosphere.
