The City Council in San Antonio, Texas recently approved a measure that will require strippers to wear permits while they are on stage.
According to the Associated Press, the reasoning behind this deliberate public shaming of women (called a “human display ordinance,” puh-leeze) is to make it easier for police to identify dancers.
Um, isn’t stripping legal? And I’m guessing if you’re in a strip club, it would be pretty easy to identify who the dancers are. If the local cops can’t figure that shit out on their own, I’d say the City Council has a lot more to worry about than strippers.
A lawyer for clubs in the area is arguing against the measure, pointing out that it is pretty fucking dangerous for a woman to wear a piece of paper that displays her name and address.
But hey, what’s wrong with accommodating potential stalkers, right?

This strikes me as unconstitutional:

You've got to be fucking kidding me.
Only in my good 'ol state of Texas, and it's bloody ridiculous.
Anything in that measure that specifies, say, whether the permit must be legibly displayed? Or simply that they have to be worn?
Yeah, tough times in Texas. A stripped I got a lapdance from last week told me she used to own a club in Texas but had just moved to NJ and was dancing in the local clubs as an independent. When I asked what brought her to Jersey, she said that the laws were getting really strict in Texas.
I don't know if the gremlins ate my post or what, but I'm reposting just because as a young feminist respectfully offering my viewpoint I can't imagine why it would be censored away:
“what’s wrong with accommodating potential stalkers”
You tell me, Jessica.
Why are you more upset strippers may have to wear permits than you are about men who see strippers getting routinely, murderously, rapingly, stalkingly violent with them? How can you concern yourself with men being more violent with strippers if they know their names, but not think about the extreme amounts of violence pseudo-named strippers currently face by their male customers? Like you said, stripping is legal, but that hasn’t helped the male violence strippers face, so what do you propose, more laws making it more illegal to commit violence against women?
While some American feminists are preoccupied defending every woman’s right to anonymously face increased violence by men who think strippers are hurtable whores, Canadian feminists the past few weeks have been in an uproar about Canadian strip clubs abusing hundreds of Rumanian women trafficked into Canada through legal visas and then forced into prostitution via strip clubs.
http://sisyphe.org/article.php3?id_article=1380
“For example, data from the Canadian Ministry of immigration report that 25 Rumanian strippers landed in the country in 2001, 216 others in 2002 and 552 in 2003.”
I don’t know if a permit system would stem severe international abuses of trafficking and enslaving girls and women for sex work (like near the US-Mexico border), but I do know Nerve self-censors stories so they never bite the wealthy corporate sex industry hands that feed it.
