Women holla back

Go check out Holla Back NYC, a blog dedicated to calling out street harassers in the Big Apple. Love it.

Whether you're commuting, lunching, partying, dancing, walking, chilling, drinking, or sunning, you have the right to feel safe, confident, and sexy, without being the object of some duckweed's fantasy. So stop walkin' on and Holla Back!

The site encourages women to send in their street harassment stories and--if possible--catch the assholes in the act with a camera phone.

The creepiest harassing comment on the site so far? "Girl I can Smell You." Lovely.

The gallery of shame is such a good idea. It's also an incentive for me to get a camera phone. Then I could have pictures of the men who say things to me like "Wanna feel my produce?" Shudder.

I wonder if there will be spinoff sites around the country...Holla Back Chi-town? Holla Back LA?

Looks like a great site. The first thing I thought of when I read the "smell you" post was the cringeworthy scene in The Silence of the Lambs where Clarice walks past the cell of one Multiple Miggs, who makes a smiliar - if more obscene - comment.

Why wait until you get to the nearest computer? Yelling something back is fun and a lot less frusterating.

creepiest i've heard: "i wanna be your bike." he was like ten years younger than me, though, so i was flattered.

it has always seemed dangerous to glare or mistreat people who harrass me, like it would be making a mildly threatening situation very threatening. once when i was too dismissive of some drunken fratties, i went from being very compelling to a "bitch" in like 1.2 seconds. it's never pleasant to be called a bitch by three strange men on a street you suddenly notice is dark and empty.

hollaback isn't a cure-all -- we still have to be careful all the goddamn time, but it looks fun. i'll keep my phone at the ready.

I guess it depends on the situation. I certainly wouldn't do it alone at night.

Always considered itself above the people capable on such "peeping and peeping"...
