The new look for winter: no head or torso. So hot right now…
Looks like the highly disturbing boyfriend pillow we reported on in August now has a partner in crime. Say hello to the “girlfriend lap pillow,” sure to give you hours of fun and a lifetime of nightmares.
What is it this week about fetishizing women’s dismembered body parts? Just a couple of days ago, the NY Times reported on the trend of new “curvy” mannequins. And I’m sorry—I don’t care if they’re “more realistic.” The fact that someone actually says in the article that “men like it…Some guys come in and buy the mannequins,” is enough to make me know something is seriously wrong.
Gross.

If they like them, and they buy it, what business of yours is it? It's a free country, you know.
And about "fetishizing" dismembered body parts, remember that women use penis-shaped dildoes, something a lot more explicit than a fashion mannequin. And if men don't complain about it, why do you complain about those?
I think that's a really good point, actually. But vibrators and "sex toys" (both for women and men) are seen as the seedier side of society...you don't see them displayed in store windows, etc. These aren't things that are really considered socially acceptable.
I don't know about you, but I'm not using my dildo to turn a profit. Using women's fragmented body parts to sell clothing (and drawing in men who but the mannequin's, why?) is similar to Steve Madden ads that infantilize women into looking like midget porn stars with inflated heads because it is cute and sexy-- really just disempowering and unattainable in my opinion. The real issue is corporate consumerism capitalizing on the sexualization of women's body parts to make money. While this one issue may not be the entire downfall of humankind, the subconscious messages that we are sent as a culture about what a woman's body should look like and what it should be used for, and the little worth it is usually given for performing practical and useful functions is what is really at hand. I was also disturbed by mannequins in a children's store with no heads-- it's less emphasis on people and more about just buying the goods. You have to wonder if it is really a "free country" when you think about the messages we are sent that affect our "choices."
P.S. I would rather use a dildo that looked like a rabbit or a dolphin than a penis. And what's up with pocket vagina's?
So you think that mannequins wearing women's clothing aren't used to display clothing for women to look at, instead they are symbols of our culture's sexualization of women's body parts? Am I understanding this correctly? But male mannequins are somehow not the same thing, right?
And pocket vaginas are just like dildos. Duh. You don't like to use your hands all the time. Neither do we. Why does that disturb you? Seriously.
Rachel, you walk around in life trying pretty hard to find things to get offended at. You're fishing too hard - and your reasoning is flawed. Manequins without heads? Egads, maybe they were just trying to save money and a head wasn't necessary for modeling their clothes? Do you also get offended by manequins without arms/legs?
