According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), women in New Orleans are more likely to be impoverished and heading single-parent families:
The poverty rate among female-headed families — which comprise 56 Women of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region are especially hard-hit by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, as they are more likely than men to be in poverty, and to head single-parent families, according to a new study released today by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.Click here for the full report. The Women of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast: Multiple Disadvantages and Key Assets for Recovery, Part I. Poverty, Race, Gender and Class uses U.S. Census Bureau data to provide a detailed portrait of poverty among women and people of color in the city of New Orleans and the metropolitan areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas hardest hit by the hurricanes. The paper also presents data on poverty in the cities and metropolitan areas to which many hurricane victims have moved. The paper finds that poverty rates for women in this region are higher than for the nation as a whole, at 25.9% in the city of New Orleans, 17.4% in the broader New Orleans metropolitan area, 18.6% in the Biloxi-Gulfport-Pascagoula metropolitan area of Mississippi, and 16.2% in the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area of Texas, compared with 14.5% nationally.
“Recognizing the unique circumstances of women in the Gulf Coast region must be central to the rebuilding efforts. Ensuring that women are fully represented in the planning process will help to inform effective workforce development strategies and the design of services that support employment,” said IWPR Director of Research Dr. Barbara Gault. “Because of the high prevalence of single mother families, for example, access to convenient child care is crucial for successful redevelopment.”

Hate to say it peeps but sometimes the sentiment sets at the bottom. These are uneducated, undisciplined people who are having too many babies, creating future criminals, and basically creating a mess of their pointless lives. Seriously what is the point. No it is not completely, or even mostly, their fault. just bad situations, being in the wrong place, just the unfairness of lousy genetics, the starving people overseas, Joe blow hit yesterday by a schoolbus, and sally sue who just got herpes from her lying boyfriend.
It is like we pretend that if we gave them all middle class homes and an suv presto suddenly they would be normal people. sure.
...because we all know the same gene that causes people to be losers is linked to the genes for both vaginas and dark skin tone.
So don't worry, folks, the reason black people and women are poor is because of genetics. No need to get up in arms.
one reason you might "hate to say it" is because it's wrong. and it's not just wrong because what you mean to say is "SEDIMENT" not "sentiment."
it's also wrong because your "lousy genetics" argument sounds a lot like some bullshit eugenics crap that says that black people are genetically inferior to white people (i mean, shoot, look at who's rich and who's poor... clearly, the poor people are genetically inferior, right? wrong.)
it's also wrong because your idea of "normal" is totally fucked... you mean normal like you... and you're not normal... you're a (relatively) rich white man living in the united states... a majority of people (and i think that should be rubric for "normal") are not like you...
and certainly a house and a car are not going to fix what's wrong... i wrote a bunch of things that might, but i erased them because that's not the point...
well... it's just not worth it... this is sickening... reading your self-righteous "i'm so much better than poor people" crap makes me want to throw up... and i can't even get coherent about it... can someone please say something... this is disgusting... jones, i hope you can take a minute and grow a heart in that chest of yours, because what you wrote is so out of touch with reality and humanity that... ugh... you're talking about people, people who've been through things you couldn't imagine... don't even try to pretend that you're better than them...
oh, yeah, and it's also wrong because what this article is talking about is giving people the capacity to get jobs and stable living situations... through things such as childcare during job hunting and working hours... not suvs and "middle class homes", whatever those are...
summary of the report:
employment with living wages (did you even know minimum wage is still like 5.15/hr, which, at full time, is lower than the poverty level???), job training, public assistance to meet basic needs (i.e. food, healthcare, etc.), accessible child care, include the affected women in the planning proces and open up a dialogue about poverty that addresses race and gender...
i didn't see anything in there about suvs or middle-class homes...
what is wrong with you, man?
puck, you totally missed my point, but thank you for correcting my spelling.
So you're admitting that I did get your point?
Nice of you to come right out and say it, I guess... that's the first step, anyway.
Haven't the Democrats been in charge of New Orleans and Louisiana for the last 60 years? That place should be Utopia. How is it that all these inequities exist after they've been in charge all these years?
