Study suggests women take decline in social status better then men

This study published in the UK suggests that women deal better with decline in social or financial losses. The study seems to have several flaws(like suggesting that one reason is because women look to successful family life instead of career success for happiness) and should not be generalized outside of its sample population, but I still thought it was interesting.

Men who experienced a downward social shift were four times more likely to feel depressed than men who improved their social status, whereas there was no marked difference in the mental health between women who moved up or down the social ladder, according to research from Britain's Newcastle University.

Women in the study were actually twice as likely to be downwardly mobile but generally avoided the depression and poor psychological wellbeing shown by men, the study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health said.

Maybe because women have had to deal with lack of access to upward mobility for so long, that they can just deal. A sad thought, but just an idea...

I believe that women are better at dealing with change than men. Any type of change.

Why? One reason may be that men suffer from cognative dissonance. When their view of being in control is threatened by the facts of change, men simply can't cope. Women have never pretended to be in control, so change doesn't make them rethink their existance.

Or it could simply be physiological. Women's lives are change. Our bodies change throughout the month.

Change is easier for women to accept because it is part of our lives.

This is a very interesting article, in the sense that women are being recognized for being stronger in failing.

What kind of issue is that to research and document?

Is this an issue, because men are jealous and would so like to be more like us, understanding and strong-minded individuals, who know how to take a licking and keep on ticking?

No, I don't think it is, what I think the article is saying is because men have always been more successful than women, they are too manly and pig-headed to know when they've been beat and just man up about it. So instead on mainly focusing why they cannot take failing easier, they turn around and add women in the mix of saying, "they're the only ones that are suppose to fail, it's not fair!!"

I wish I'd said that!

Thanks, Julia for the praise.
I guess in a way we(men and women) are always comparing ourselves with one another, but it seems when it's something they can't achieve they (the minority, here being men) turn it around.

You had a good point, in the fact that we are use to change, and adapt to it better, I like to think God made us this way.
