Perhaps they think if they use scare quotes it will make 'the gays' less real.

Um..because it's a literary nod that the word should be homosexuals, but for some reason, homosexuals have approved the self-assigned misnomer "gay" as acceptable for others to refer to them? Because an apostrophe indicates something omitted or a plural possesive?
