What a dick
This is great. An Israeli playwright has just created a one-man show--The Holy Penis--in response to the success of The Vagina Monologues. I always thought guys talked about their penises quite enough, but I guess one more play about genitalia can’t hurt.
Rafael Milo-Amar said on Tuesday that his one-man show, "The Holy Phallus", was inspired by a disparaging remark one of the Israeli actresses in the local production of Eve Ensler's celebrated play had made about the male member. So there."She said there was nothing to say about the penis. I told myself, 'I have something to tell her about the penis'," Milo-Amar told the Jerusalem Post.
I'd actually be really interested to see this, it is described as an "extended monologue touching on rape, passion, handicaps, homosexuality and loneliness."

Using "phallus" to mean "penis" instead of the semiotic representation of the penis is actually kinda, well, not much different than the mentality (or intelligence) of that "puppetry of the penis" show that got some modicum of attention a while back amongst the trendy-gendery folk.
It's really sad what gets attention these days.
I really dislike the Vagina Monologues - the use of vagina in the title alone is problematic, ignoring the external female genitalia - but the play gets so much support becuase it has a political imperative, i.e raising money for groups fighting violence against women. What would a penis play raise money for? Who would want to go and see it anyway - most straight men would shy away from the genital-bonding thing out of fear of homoeroticism.
I think there is room for debate about men's sexuality, but leave the penis out of it - male sexuality (not to mention women's) already suffers from over-concentration on the penis as the be-all and end-all(!). It'd be far more groundbreaking to write about non-penetrative male sexual experience, or the emotional experience of sex, or whatever.
You know, men don't really talk about their penises. They brag, they make lots of lame jokes, but they don't really talk about it. Just because there is noise doesn't mean there is communication. The experience of just owning genitalia is considered a source of shame in human society. Men take their share of that too, especially from the men and women who tell them they aren't Real Men™ because they act all pansy-like, you know, like human beings with thoughts, emotions, and experiences and all that stuff. (Why do anti-feminists hate men so much??)
I don't hear the "so there" in the sentence "I have something to tell her about the penis." I hear that there's something unsaid that he wants to say. The content sounds interestingly honest, not the kind of thing you'd talk about if you were posturing and strutting about Real Men™. I'd like to hear this, though I imagine I'll never get the opportunity. If it's actually a thoughtful, witty response, and not just a boring, snarky, insincere put-down to The Vagina Monologues, no one will really care about getting it seen.
Men can talk about their sexuality, but leave the penis out of it? That is an extremely sexist remark. You'd scream if a man said "talk about your sexuality, but leave your clitoris out of it".
I don't think it is an extremely sexist remark, though it might have been expressed a bit clumsily. I meant that the way men's sexuality is currently portrayed has abstract pleasure unlinked to emotion or thought as the raison d'etre of sex, and the penis at the centre of that pleasure as the thing that must be sated. That's kind of what porn is often about - penises being stimulated by watching penises being stimulated (ok, not all porn, but most) producing pleasure for pleasure's sake.
Besides which, I wouldn't talk about my clitoris in discussing my sexuality, necessarily. Sexual activity, maybe, but sexual desires and fantasies and emotions, no.

sorry I got a message saying that hadn't been posted the first time...
And here earlier, in Ancient Rome worship a sacred member was carried out with the help of wine which poured over a penis head, collecting a liquid in a special vessel after ablution. Well and further, know that with a penis to do...
