The Pill: The only thing feminists have done right?

The Daily Mail reports that birth control pills have “set women free.” Apparently everything else feminists have fought for have failed:

But while the Pill and abortion laws have had a huge impact on women's well-being, the same cannot be said for other key components of the feminists' manifesto.

Improving rights in the workplace has a negligible effect on women's happiness and economic well-being, according to the research by the London School of Economics.

It also found that changes in the divorce laws, putting women on the same footing as men, have made women worse off over all.

Feminists’ manifesto? Damn, I didn’t know we all got together and wrote a guidebook!

I guess I shouldn’t take this too seriously--any article that mentions bra-burning, a manifesto and Jennifer Aniston (!) to explain feminism isn’t all that threatening.

"It also found that changes in the divorce laws, putting women on the same footing as men, have made women worse off over all."

Bah. Feminists didn't create divorce laws that put women on the same footing as men. What divorce laws is the author talking about? Joint custody? Joint physical custody isn't presumptive in any state except Iowa, and it was supported by fathers' rights groups, not feminists. Plus the presumptive joint custody in Iowa isn't being followed, much to the chagrin of fathers' rights activists.

The laws that are making things difficult for women have actually been supported by the psychological industry as well as divorce lawyers, mediators, and others who make money from divorce and custody cases. Feminists haven't been involved in this mess. I wish feminists would get involved to put a stop to it.

My friends, you are fortunate in being unfamiliar with the Daily Mail. They hate women. They regularly run articles claiming modern woman is an unhappy creature because she is unlike 1950s woman in having a job, kiddies, social life and sex life, and numerous other lifestyle choices open to her. They're rather fond of the idea of a feminist conspiracy to deprave the nation's tender youth. The only people they do seem to like are white, conservative, and preferably royal.
I'm not sure that the article is really worth getting het up about. If you can do the 'Listen Again' thing for today's Woman's Hour http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2005_29_mon_01.shtml?wh_h_hdl you'll find a far more reasoned and woman-loving account of the impact of reliable contraception.
Not to say that I don't agree that the divorce thing is a load of bunkum.

perhaps they were referring to the manifesta, which was recommended to me by a drunk at a party, and which taught me as much about feminism as bridget jones' diary, sad to say.

alison jaggar, on the other hand, taught me all i needed to know in one sentence. feminism is about making women's lives better. by that standard, i'd like to tell the feminist-bashing daily mail to go suck one.

Actually, I think Manifesta is a wonderful book and was instrumental in turning my generalized pro-choice politics into a serious and far more articulate version of feminism. It may not be the perfect piece, but I think Baumgardner and Richards have done right by young feminists who want more from their politics than "girl power" and "sex is good."

In any case, somehow I doubt that the Daily Mail is even aware of this book, let alone inclined to read it.

That is entirely unsurprising. So long as women choose to have a child *at any point* they are punished mercilessly by the workplace, society, etc. I believe that the best estimate for professional working women who have children is something like 1,000,000 in lost lifetime income, etc.
