You know, every so often I’ll come across an article that reminds me why I started Feministing. So I must give many, many thanks to Dana Loesch, who wrote perhaps the most outdated, convoluted and just straight-up bizarre piece on feminism that I’ve seen in a long time. I also don’t like her hat.
In The real definition of feminism, published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Loesch takes the same old anti-feminist arguments and gives them her own special flair.
To start, Loesch says that she is in fact a feminist, just one that “embraces and celebrates all of the characteristics and attributes which separate women from men.” She then says “the current 60’s brand of feminism goes against that by defining femininity with masculine traits.”
Where to start...In what universe is the “60s brand of feminism” current? Does Loesch completely ignore actual current feminism out of ignorance or because it’s just easier to argue against the stereotypes that are associated with the second wave? (Not to mention, difference feminism was way popular back then. So there.)
However, it was this baffling paragraph that really got me:
Wording it that way does an injustice to the image I want to convey; feminists are with men as a 4-year-old girl is with a puppy…a bratty little girl with a Veruca Salt demeanor. I had a puppy when I was 4. I’m certain that my puppy hated my parents for giving him to me.
See? Feminists really do hate puppies. Seriously though--could someone tell me what in the world she is talking about?
In one of the most amazing collection of feminist clichés ever, Loesch also manages to bring up bra-burning (never happened) and the door-opening debate. Kudos.
But I suppose this shouldn’t be a surprise, considering this comes from someone who has blogged that “more women need to step back and let a man be a man.”

(I am procratinating on writing a paper, so this blog is even more interesting than normal. Hence all the immediate responses.)
I am particulary amused at her claim that "WIMPY MEN ARE NOT HOT".
I hadn't realized that any type of wimpy person was HOT.
Is it really just such a crazy idea that a man might like to express their feelings and a woman could possibly want to feel confident and strong by thier own determination? I'd prefer the world be filled with balanced people, who are equally confident and compassionate.
But hey, I am one of those weird sacrilegious people who believe in posthumanism, meaning gendered socialization is often a bad bad thing.
So much about her theory (if we could call it that) is laughable.
I think the puppy and spoiled brat analogy is somehow supposed to mean...women are just never satisfied with the advances that have been made and just keep demanding and abusing men for more. As for the "puppy hated parents for giving him to me" part, maybe that's somehow...people who let "radical" feminists get away with stuff? I'm really not sure.
“more women need to step back and let a man be a man.”
He can be as much "a man" as he wants to, so long as he stays back enough to let a woman be a human being.
So, her argument is basically "I abuse animals; therefore feminism is bad?"
Fortunately, this bilge is sufficiently far back in the newspaper that even a fairly thorough and faithful reader such as myself totally missed it.
Who's this Veruca Salt? Sounds like some pretentious garbage you might see at the nouveau cuisine restaurant (or at Straubs grocery store, for the St. Louisans reading this). ....featuring wild coho salmon rubbed with Veruca salt and Andalusian saffron.....
Veruca Salt is the snotty girl in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".
I'm disappointed; I was hoping this post would be about the band.
Sorry, threw a link in there. And yeah, I wish the post was about the band too.
Sadly, Dana Loesch seems to be confusing "feminine" with "feminism". Oops!
"Fortunately, this bilge is sufficiently far back in the newspaper that even a fairly thorough and faithful reader such as myself totally missed it."
Unfortunately, the online version of the paper put it right up front and center on the day it was published.
I'm not even sure where to start with how far off the mark Ms. Loesch is in her 'analysis' of feminism, but it's pretty clear that she's been 'listenin good' in church... her father-in-law is a preacher.
Yawn. Another day in St. Louis. Try not to pity us.
I thought of responding to this woman's column to point out that "feminism" (though it is a term that encompassas so many different people w/ differing views) does indeed still have a place in helping women. "Just look at South Dakota," I envisioned myself writing to her. Then I went to her blog. Then I went to her bio. Then I realized that though she might claim to be a feminist, by her own definition, she would probably have a hard time actually fitting into ANY feminist demographic. I.E. I did not want to point out that feminism still has a place as long as women's reproductive rights are in question to a woman who might very well be what is so inaptly termed "pro-life." Not really interested in having that arguement. I have my own teenage daughter to worry about.
Oh PLEASE! What did your daddy do to you to make you so hateful? You hate men. You hate women who aren't "feminists." You hate women who have babies. You hate babies. You make women look like whiny little brats! Women have it great! Life is wonderful! Maybe you should stop focusing on all the little things in life that "AREN'T FAIR...WHINE, WHINE..." and look at how fabulous we are as women. I would be miserable and bitter too if my daddy treated me like crap so all I know how to do is complain about my life. Get over it! Stop and smell the flowers, not the penis you wish you had.
Look, Dana is a good Jewish girl. She wears a hat beause it is tznius (Jewish religiously modest). She is wrestling with her observance of halacha (Jewish religious law) keeping kasher and her inate nagging, JAP-iness.
Give her a break. Even Betty Friedan rethought her me, Me ME, MEEEE brand of self-centered JAP feminism towad the end of her life (although she could never bring herself to apologize to her husband Carl for her domestic violence).
So...she sees herself as an annoying brat, and her husband as her unfortunate puppy?
This woman lives in the same small south-of-St. Louis town I grew up in. In a way, she is true to the characteristics of the locals; ill-informed, over-confident, & ignorant of just about any social issue, past or present- and that's on a good day. I honestly think the chimps I've seen at the St. Louis Zoo contemplate topics deeper than this woman writes- or thinks- about...except for their seemingly mutual near-obsession with excrement. If only we could teach them to write...
Seriously, though- the Post in St. Louis used to have a writer who wrote about women's issues in depth. She was very second wavey, and though I didn't always agree 100% with her (what feminist agrees with any other feminist 100%?), it was great to have an educated, opionated feministy writer to read. Unfortunately, she retired and women's issues do not have the outlet they need & deserve here.
Instead, we get this embarrassment- unintelligent & assuming, Dana Loesch painfully lacks the substance & depth that writers of a major newspaper should have. I can't help but wonder why she was hired, since there are plenty of intellectual and entertaining women writing meaningful material who could easily replace her. Is this yet another form of sexism- "Sure, we'll give women more voice in the media, as long as they reinforce stereotypes & write mindless drivel." Unfortunately, crap like this is printed every week-which she seems to think is cute, funny, enlightening, and sexy. A quick visit to her site reveals that when she's not busy taking pictures of herself, she writes about poop, snot, stains, and how she didn't know how to operate a microwave until she had kids or how she didn't think fish pooped (with resentment & weak attempts at social theory peppered throughout).
With so, so many issues facing women on so many levels- rampant sexual violence, threats to repro rights, human trafficking, workplace discrimination, the second shift, & exploitation for starters- and so, so many people unaware of the issues...*sighs*
If you want to talk about 3rd wave (or 2nd wave?) feminism & its pros & cons, fine. Feminists are and will be doing that for years. But at least have a CLUE about it before you speak-!!

I'd like to encourage all of you to drop the STL Post-Dispatch or stltoday.com a line or two letting them know how you feel about Loesch's asinine column and her equally-awful blog. The Post is all business: if enough people complain about the idiocy she spouts, she'll be history.
Wow, this page just got more and more hateful as it went along. I like to think that we can all express are own opinions...don't READ Dana's column if you don't like 'em. Easy, right? If you don't relate, that's fine. Big deal.
Ok, I know this is an outdated column, but I do hope you still check them for new comments, because this is the most juvenile display of jealous blogging that I have ever seen. I am a loyal follower of Dana's and she does not deserve your woman bashing just because her views are different than yours. Welcome to the 21st century.

Heather - you're a "loyal follower" of Dana's? Be careful - we know how she feels about those pesky puppies!
Loesch is out of the Post altogether now: no print presence and no online presence.
I'm glad the Post finally wised up and gave that fool the boot; she can go preach her doctrine to other "feminists" like H, and give the rest of STL a break.
