I didn’t watch the Super Bowl, but if you want some feminist analysis of the always-talked about commercials, check out Bernie at PopPolitics.
After reading this, I’m kind of glad I skipped all those football parties.
Take, for example, the second ad after kickoff in this year’s Super Bowl: Burger King introduced us to “The Whopperettes” (click on “Super Bowl Spectacular” to see the ad). While the ad features women doing a musical number, the women are not overtly sexualized (although one of them is swimsuit model Brooke Burke) and the ad initially has a gender-neutral and somewhat satirical “it’s an extravaganza!” feel. The women, after all, are dressed up in ridiculous outfits representing the many ingredients in a Whopper.But as the ad continues, its message becomes disturbingly clear -- and it’s nothing new: women are to be consumed by men. The bizarreness of the ad is that Burger King has found a literal embodiment of this idea -- which, of course, is the foundation for most Super Bowl advertising.

this add is not about men consuming women because men are not interested in that. It goes like this: men want to have sex with women. Men want to consume burgers. the song and dance routine was just that, i am sure all in good cheer and merryment. I didn't see the add or the superbole but, really if you read too much into things you are near certain to get them totally wrong.
JJS, again I ask, are you kidding me? Have you ever bothered to read any feminist theory or actually reflect on the topics posted on this site, or do you just pop on over to the site to let free whatever comment is currently on the tip of your tongue?
There is something called the male gaze. There is something called the connection between sex and power. There is something called the commercial pandering to the male gaze. Was there no deeper meaning when Hustler magazine featured a woman being put through a meat grinder on its cover? Is there no deeper meaning when nearly all Bud Light commercials consist of somewhat doofy, pudgy men dodging their mean, shrewish wives so they can drink their watered-down brew? Is there no deeper meaning when godaddy.com (whatever the hell that is) features ads that mainly consist of breasts?
Ask yourself this: if the Burger King ad had nothing to do with sex and power and consumption and was "merely" all in good fun, then why didn't the ad feature a bunch of dancing men dressed in cute condiment costumes? Or both men and women dancing?
on the one hand, the women in the commercial were more about funny than booby. that's a nice change. on the other, they were objects, not subjects. a woman watching was to think, "i wish i could be piled on a burger," while a man would think "i will go out and pile hot women on a burger! soon!"
the godaddy commercial was offensive, again, because it was so stupid, again. are men watching the superbowl too stupid to access tittie mags to satisfy their auto-handjob needs? do the increasing number of women who also like eating dip all day and wearing comfy clothes on the couch really have to watch that?
what's even more fun about that commercial, is that the censorious christian letter-writers will blame "hollywood liberals," when godaddy is a hardcore republican company.
Urgh, I didn't know godaddy.com was a "red" organization, though I'm dropping them now for their sexist antics as well. Anyone know of a progressive domain registration company I can use instead? I can't find one on BuyBlue, and I've got a lot of business these lunkheads are about to lose that needs to go somewhere more enlightened.
(As a feminist guy, let me also say thanks for the great site. It's a valuable source of news I don't hear anywhere else.)
funny post, triffld... anyways, did you know that buyblue.org is actually registered through godaddy as well? you should email them about this...
yeah, so, i don't know what their politics are, but i use 1&1 (1and1.com) 'cos they're among the cheaper registrars out there... so, they may not be that cool, but you'll at least save some dough while you're looking for something more 'blue'.

Of course I know what the male gaze is. WHo does not? It is a powerful tool that aids in making a woman horny. As for sex and power, yes, I am familiar with it. Your viewpoint depends on if you prefer to be a dom or sub, so really it is hard to generalize, and i would not presume as to your preferences. This really has nothing to do with dancing about in a commercial. as for men dressing like idiots, need i remind you of the fruit of the loom fruit?
I never heard it argued that when guys reached for the 5 pack of briefs they were hankering ot eat other men dressed as fruit. Lets be real here people. convoluted conspiracy theories while entertaining help nothing.

As for your GoDaddy comment: what's up with the hostility? Men like boobs. Oh, the horror.
I should note that I am proud of women for finally penetrating the "eating dip all day and wearing comfy clothes on the couch" demographic ;)
Finally: how do you differ from "the censorious christian letter-writers" you deride? Aren't you writing a letter trying to get rid of media (in this case the same exact commercial) which offends you? It never ceases to amaze me how much the PC and conservative agendas have in common.
Thanks, puckalish. I've found a couple other maybes as well. Like I said, my first reason for dropping them is the sexist crap in their ads. But the politics is enough to warrant it as well.
(And I noticed that about BuyBlue as well when I did a whois on them. Shameful, really, but it explains why I couldn't find any ISP/registrar ratings there.)
In the meantime, it looks like eNom or Dotster might be a better bet. Gotta do some more hunting around.
