Dismemberment is the new black
Make sure to check out Rebecca Traister’s latest, Topless bodies found in brainless magazine. Traister takes on Vanity Fair’s most recent issue where the magazine let Tom Ford go nutty.
The short version: clothed men, naked women or women parts. Predictable and disappointing.
Traister’s take is much more comprehensive. My fave part:
I don't mean to be a scold; I have nothing against nudity in magazines. One of my favorite images from Hollywood issues past is of Sigourney Weaver, dressed in a fishnet body stocking and boots, lying on her back, one breast very visible. The photo was aptly dubbed "The Force." In it, Weaver looked fierce, turned on by her own long body. That picture might fairly have been described as a "Do Me" shot, but it projected an unspoken warning: "Do me wrong, and I'll kick you hard with my big boots." Sienna Miller looks like if you did her wrong she might pop another Klonopin and doze off.

It does have a smarmy "harem" overtone. There is no doubt that their posing next to a clothed male makes them seem like his playthings. It sort of makes you wonder why two highly respected actresses went along with this. They were probably thinking "it's vanity fair, how bad could it be!" Little did they know. It's a bit emasculating, and not for Ford.
I suppose it's an easy mistake to make though, considering how complex and subtle the subject of female nudity can be. It's curious that Rachel McAdams backed out of the shoot. Pretty smart of her really. I personally think she is the best actress out of the three too, because she has more range. Now if her tushie had been on the cover... lol
Tom Ford was photoshopped into the picture (it was an unplanned alteration). No one (including the actresses) knew during the shoot that this would be done.
Thanks for the tip off. That totally makes sense actually. (Though I can't help wondering where you heard that.)
How could someone photoshop an Annie Leibowitz photo?!? (spelling). Was she in the loop?
Seems pretty shady to me. Now I have a lot more sympathy for the two actresses.
Nothing a good pair of scissors couldn't fix! (joking)
Here is a link to the video B-Roll. If you watch the video, you will see them showing the actresses the cover shot (Tom Ford is nowhere to be seen in the shot).
