Idaho and gay marriage.

State by state this country is just dying to become the most intolerable country in the world.

A proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in Idaho passed the state Senate on Wednesday and will go to voters this November.

If approved, it would mean that in Idaho, "a marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized."

Opponents argued that a constitutional amendment isn't necessary because state law already defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. Supporters say the amendment would prevent judges from overturning that law.

Last week, the measure passed the House 53-17 vote. The Senate vote was 26-9.

You know just in case there was one judge who believes in rights for gays in Idaho.

I saw Margeret Cho on C-Span a few months ago (talking about her new book) and she was saying that the funniest thing about the people that oppose gay marriage is that these folks wouldn't really even know that gay people were getting married, if no one had told them.

Idaho is a very red state (I live and blog in it), but I would like to point out that this identical amendment came up in the state legislature last year and didn't make it through the senate. There were a few congresspeople who changed their votes this year, and I'm very disappointed.

On the other hand, western politics have quite a large libertarian current running through them, so it's not impossible that the amendment will be defeated when it goes to ballot. I know I'll be knocking on doors and offering rides to polling places.

Idaho has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the country. However I don't feel I can always enjoy it because of the people who live here. I live in N. Idaho and one of our high schools is in a controversial uproar because students formed a GLBA club. Since they followed all charter rules and passed approval of the school/city attorney, those who object can't have it banned. Therefore, they are trying to bann ALL clubs from the school, just to get rid of this one. How absolutely pathetic is that? I'm embarrassed.
