Surprise surprise! I guess not really, but it still pisses me off.
The Associated Press wrote a piece yesterday on the post-election stress that feminists are feeling and their priorities for the near future. Among the women quoted in the piece was NOW president Kim Gandy, Marcia Greenberger of the National Women's Law Center, and Ellie Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. You would think that a discussion on the future of feminism would maybe discuss the women who are the future of feminism--young women.
I understand that these are the usual suspects when it comes to media coverage on women’s rights, but it’s so disheartening to see arguments about feminism being passé without any mention of all the hard work young women are doing. Sigh.
Despite my disappointment in the lack of attention paid to younger feminists, the piece is still worth checking out.
Celebrate good times, some favorite quotes from the article
Christina Hoff Sommers thinks we should be partying: “Women have achieved parity with men in most fields…You'd think the feminists and women's studies professors would be celebrating…”
And Carrie Lukas of the Independent Women's Forum says we party a little too much: “Their 'March for Women's Lives' last year seemed like a celebration of abortion.” (Woo hoo! Does everyone have their I Heart Abortion party hats on?!)

That's because 99% of journalists are lazy sods. Can't get off their duffs to talk to human beings not presented to them by PR flacks or present on rolodexes due to leadership position in a well-known organization.
The solution, if possible, is obvious. Get a "feminist experts" referral organization on rolodexes. List x number of nationally known young feminists specializing in various issues, y number of local feminists, by state and city, z number of professors in various specialties. After all, that is why Heritage Foundation and similar rightwing organizations rule the talkshow waves. They make contacts and bookings mindlessly easy, and in addition they spend big bucks wining and dining journalists to spread their wares.

I thought we feminists were humorless and dour? They need to pick a stereotype and stick with it.
I don't think Hoff Summers wants me to party. After a few drinks, I am even less tolerant of men putting sexist shit on me.
